‘Invent a time machine and let me do over yesterday. Or better still, stop me going to the stupid Lovefest thing altogether.’

Chloe stroked the top of her best friend’s head. ‘I would If I could, Jen Jen.’ She planted a peck on Jen’s forehead. ‘But alas, that’s just outside my skill set.’ She headed back to Ryan.

‘So, we definitely not doing the second text?’ he asked, putting an arm around Chloe as she got comfy again.

‘We?’ Jen queried.

‘Yeah, this a group mission now.’

Jen liked Ryan. She’d seen Chloe smitten before, but it felt different this time. He was a genuinely nice bloke, unlike the arseholes Chloe usually went for. Jen hoped she kept him.

‘Hypothetically speaking,’ Jen ventured, pointing to thin air again. ‘If I did, what would I say?’

‘Personally, I would just ask if I did something wrong,’ said Ryan.

‘Really?’ Chloe asked, looking shocked. ‘Do you not think that’s a little forward?’

‘Nah. Why play games?’

Chloe pursed her lips, giving her head a little wiggle as if to agree.

‘So just: did I do something wrong? That’s it? Nothing else?’

‘Not needed,’ Ryan replied, slicing the air with a level hand as if it was the most logical solution in the world and there was no reason to question it.

Could she, though? What if Holly wasn’t ghosting her? She’d look desperate as fuck. Double-texting was one thing, but being so forthright was another.

Jen looked at her phone again. Holly had read the message when she’d sent it this afternoon. Five hours later and there was still nada back.

She hated feeling this needy. It was a new emotion, and one she didn’t want to get used to.

‘Right. Ryan, I’m going to do it.’

Chloe bolted upright. ‘Jen, I’m being serious, I don’t think you should.’

‘No, Ryan’s right. Why play games? I need to know what’s going on.’

Chloe let out a frustrated sigh. ‘And what if she says she doesn’t like you back?’

‘I’m not going that far. I just want to know why she’s giving me the silent treatment.’

‘Okay. Worst case scenario: she says it’s because you have feelings and she doesn’t. What will you say to that?’

‘I’ll say. . .’ Jen paused, weighing up her options. ‘I’ll say, okay. Cool.’

‘Pffft.’ Chloe leaned back into the sofa cushions, her arms crossed.

‘I need to know. We have our date in a few days – I can’t go on that without knowing what’s going on.’

‘Will it not be a bit bloody awkward either way?’

Jen shrugged. ‘Well then, what’s the harm?’

‘This is going to end in disaster,’ Chloe said, her voice sing-songy.

‘If it was me and you, I’d want to know what I’d done wrong,’ Ryan admitted.

‘Yeah, but that’s different. We’re dating.’
