‘I can’t see you. Are we in the same one?’

‘I’m still at the pizza. One min.’

A few short steps and she was in the middle aisle. Ahead, in the centre of the empty aisle, was Holly, facing the other way as she looked for Jen. Wine tucked under one arm, a bouquet of flowers in her hand. At the sight of her, Jen’s breath caught in her throat.

‘Turn around.’

‘Huh?’

‘Turn around,’ Jen repeated, biting on her bottom lip in an attempt to keep emotion under wraps.

Holly turned, her face lighting up. ‘Hey.’

‘Hey yourself.’

Without breaking eye contact Jen slipped her phone away, Holly mirroring the move.

It felt like forever until they were finally together, only inches apart.

‘Hey,’ Holly repeated, quiet like they were having to sneak about.

‘Hey.’

‘You got everything you need?’

‘I thought you’d be hungry after your deliveries,’ Jen replied, gesturing with the pizza box.

Holly nodded and Jen watched the rise and fall of her chest.

She wanted nothing more than to kiss her, but now wasn’t the place or the time.

‘Home?’ Jen asked, sticking to the low volume rule.

Another nod.

Just like that, they were off, heading for the self-checkouts. Holly found her voice on the way, their pace gathering speed the closer they got to the exit. ‘I thought your reply was weird.’

‘Huh?’

‘I spilled my guts out and you just replied about taking space.’

‘It was hardly gut-spilling,’ Jen teased, scanning the items through at record speed. The beacon above the till flashed red, needing approval for the booze.

‘Eh, excuse me. It was near enough.’ Holly tugged at the hem of Jen’s jacket. There was a pause before she searched the periphery for staff. ‘Why’s no one coming?’

Jen went on tiptoe, scanning the shop floor. The lady at the checkout was too busy serving to even make eye contact.

They’d been here years.

‘I thought you didn’t like me,’ Jen said, still looking for staff. Where the hell was everyone?

‘You were the one saying you didn’t want a relationship.’

Jen paused her search for help, shifting her focus back to Holly’s brown eyes. ‘I can see why that might have been confusing.’

‘Ya think?’ Holly replied, pulling a face. ‘Surely there can’t just be one person working in the whole fucking shop?’

The universe was definitely having a good laugh at their expense. Jen did a quick sweep of Holly, taking in her gorgeous legs and the way her baggy top accentuated all the right places. ‘I’ve got booze at home. I can order us a pizza. Let’s just go.’ She grabbed her hand, Holly’s fingers instinctively lacing with hers.
