‘Probably you,’ Chloe shot back with another grunt.

‘Hey!’ Jen turned back to Holly, putting on her best puppy-dog face. ‘It was true, though. Forgive me?’

‘I’ll consider it.’ Without thinking, Holly gave Jen a quick peck on the lips. God, her lip balm tasted good. She couldn’t go a whole evening without taking things further.

‘Oi, oi,’ Chloe goaded.

Holly’s cheeks matched Jen’s. A few days ago she would have second-guessed kissing Jen, but now it was the most natural thing in the world. Well, in this little room, with people they knew. She wasn’t about to snog Jen on the number six bus or whatever. This was Glasgow, after all.

‘What’s our final question, then?’ Jen asked, regaining composure and holding the whiteboard away from Holly.

‘Okay, final question. Who do you think will say I love you first? If you’ve not said it already, of course.’ Annie asked with a wink, despite still being off camera.

‘Wow. Don’t hold back, Annie. Em,’ Holly turned the question over. She preferred the shoe one – this was much harder to guess.

Jen’s narrowed eyes hinted she was debating, too.

‘Were your questions just as hard?’ Holly asked Chloe.

‘We gothow many kids are you having?’ Ryan replied, his arms draped over his girlfriend’s shoulders.

That would have been much easier. Less pressure.

Holly blew out, stalling.

‘Ladies, time for an answer,’ Annie pressed.

Jen shrugged. ‘Fifty-fifty chance.’ She scribbled on her whiteboard.

It was far too soon for this carry-on. Did she love her, though? She definitely could over time. Of course. But not less than twenty-four hours after they technically had started dating.

‘So, who’s going to sayI love youfirst?’ Holly repeated, still stalling.

‘Uh-huh,’ Annie confirmed.

Holly tilted her head, looking for an answer in Jen’s eyes.

It didn’t matter.

Not really.

But she didn’t want to look like a lovesick twat, or worse, that she didn’t care at all.

‘Me,’ Holly settled on. ‘Because Jen is rubbish at saying how she feels.’

Jen lifted her chin, the smile quirking her lips saying she wasn’t surprised by that answer.Phew. Bullet dodged.

‘Right,’ Jen said, turning her board round. ‘I also put you.’

Holly smiled: was that a good or bad thing? Was it expected of her now? Crikey, this was spiralling. She pushed the thought to the back of her mind.

‘Three for three, ladies. Impressive,’ Annie beamed.

‘Touch and go with the shoes, but I got there in the end,’ Holly replied, happy with herself.

‘So, what do we get?’ Jen asked, leaning over the counter. God, her arse looked good.

Isaac snapped the viewfinder closed. ‘Nothing per se, but it’s about getting the public vote.’
