Sean gave a short nod. “You said there was a spare key.”

She nodded. “It’s above the door jamb.”

Brock made a disgruntled sound. Ian shot him a warning look.

“When we get up there, Brock and I will go inside first to check things out. If we give the all-clear, you come in and pack up a few things. I don’t want to take any more than ten minutes. In and out. Everyone understand?”

They all murmured in agreement. Single file, they entered the courtyard and headed past the elevator and toward the stairs. Ian put Jessica in front of him, making sure she was secure from both sides. They made it to the top floor and turned the corner. Jessica motioned the direction to take.

A door closed behind him, prompting Ian to glance over his shoulder. He bumped into Jessica, who had stopped in the middle of the hall. Her face was ashen as she stared at a door left partially ajar. “That’s my apartment.”

Brock glanced down the hall. “The one that’s open?”

She paled, then nodded and took a step backward, bumping against Ian’s chest. “I always lock my doors. Do you think someone is in there?”

Sean frowned. “Why would those people want to be in your apartment?” He whirled around to face her. “Is there something you’re not telling us? Were you involved in what Tucker was doing?” He took a step toward her, but there was nowhere for her to go with Ian creating a wall behind her.

Ian stepped around her, coming between them. “Of course not!”

Sean scowled at Ian. “You don’t know that. Really, you don’t even really knowher. Maybeshewas their target all along and Tucker was caught in the crosshairs.”

Jessica gasped and came out from behind Ian. “Those men who shot Tucker were complete strangers to me. I’ve never seen them before that night. I’m not a criminal. But I’m quickly beginning to realize that Tucker wasn’t who I thought he was. For all I know, he hid something at my place for safekeeping and those guys are looking for it.”

Sean’s brows lifted a fraction. “That’s actually not a bad theory.” He glanced over his shoulder to the door that had been left ajar. “Brock and I will go check it out. Ian, you stay here with Jessica. Once we give the all-clear, you guys come in.”

Ian gave a sharp nod and herded Jessica around the corner of the hallway where they’d be out of sight. Whatever was going on went deeper than he’d expected. He held up a finger to his lips. Jessica pressed her lips into a thin line and leaned against the wall.
