Brock’s words went unheeded as Ian vaulted over a waist-high fence and landed in the soft grass without making much of a sound. He flicked the strap off of his gun holster, prepared to retrieve his weapon if needed and made his way toward the front steps.

“Mr.Baker!” Gomez jumped out of her SUV, an angry expression on her face.

“Ian,” Brock hissed from the sidewalk. “Listen to them. We don’t know what we’re dealing with. You’re no good to Jessica dead.”

Ian placed a finger over his mouth, then gestured for his brother to follow, ignoring all calls for him to return to the sidewalk. Sean’s truck pulled up behind Brock’s, and his brothers climbed out. “Is she in there?” Sean asked.

Both DEA officers must have had enough. They shoved past Ian’s brothers and headed through the opening in the fence. If they thought they’d remove him from his position, they were crazy. There was no doubt in his mind Jessica was inside and possibly hurt. The sooner he could get to her, the better.

Ian hurried up the front steps and attempted to peer through the window. He placed both hands on either side of his face, but the drapes prevented him from being able to see much. The knob wouldn’t budge. There had to be another way into the house. A heavy hand landed on his shoulder. Ian shook off the other agent and moved to another window.

Where was the sheriff? His vehicle was missing. If Brock was correct and this was his house, then he should have been here. Ian clambered down the steps and pointed a finger at Sean. “Call the sheriff. See where he is.”

“Where are you going?” Brock spun around as Ian passed him.

“I’m going to try to get in there.” He jogged around the side of the building toward the backyard, fighting off the feeling that something was horribly wrong and ignoring the disgruntled shouts of both agents he left behind.
