“Nick. He’s my friend.” Friend. Right. Words are for sure her superpower. She gives me a small smile. “It was great talking to you. Nick, I guess, doesn’t want me here.”Nickdoesn’t want her here. FuckingNickcalls the shots?

With that, they leave—and from the looks of it, silently arguing as they walk out of the door. Why does it hurt so much to see her walk away?

LEIA

If I’m not careful, I’ll be in trouble.

I shouldn’t have gone to lunch with him. It would’ve at least spared the hurt he caused with the simple wordsI just can’t have you. And of course he can’t. I’m sixteen. How did I think going to lunch with him would go? That he’d profess his undying love for me? What was I thinking?

“Leia, what are you thinking about?”

We’re preparing for the end-of-summer party tonight in the dorms, but my mind, as always, wanders like a toddler. Taya puts up a balloon before turning to me.

“Nothing...”

“Babe, I’ve known you since middle school. Surely you know by now I’m lacking in the idiot department.” Yep. Sounds about right. Sighing, I put some balloons down and sit on the couch.

“Why are guys difficult?”

Rolling her eyes, she gives me a sympathetic stare.

“Is this about the college guy from the beach?” I close my eyes and throw my head back. “He’s incollege, girl. He has hundreds of college girls to choose from.”

“I know. But...it just hurt the way he rejected me.”

“He didn’t reject you. He was beingsmart. You’re not eighteen.”

“Yes, Taya. I know.”

“Good. Now help me with these balloons and stop wallowing. Pick your chin up.”

Laughing, I get up and pin up some balloons. She’s right. We’re having a party tonight, and there will be some guys there to dance with. Nothing to worry about.

Except there’s everything to worry about. Who knew college kids partied so hard?Literally every Lifetime movie warns you about that. Goddamn, the kitchen is filled with girls, their shirts above their stomachs. God only knows where that’s going. I bump into a couple making out, and the girl gets angry because her man ogles me. This is so cliché.

The loud music can’t even drown out the murderous thoughts I have about Taya as she makes out with some random guy. I grab her, and she looks at me, confused.

“The hell’s wrong with you?”

“Shouldn’t you be helping us with the drinks?” We were told to watch the drinks and make sure no one spikes them. Our camp counselors rely on the track girls to host the party and make sure everything is under control. Everything isnotunder control.

“Leia, you worry too much,” she says, rolling her eyes.

“Taya, we could get in trouble for not doing what we were told to do.” Someone’s probably already spiked the fruit punch, with my luck.

“Girly, we leave camp in two days. How could they possibly punish us?” She just rolls her eyes again and continues making out with the guy. She’s clearly a lost cause, so I go find Sarah. But she’s dancing, sandwiched between two guys.Kill. Me.

JAKE

If I had a dime for how many people I saw making out...

I’d be a fucking millionaire. This party that Leia invited us to is way too crazy. Of course, not as crazy as our Greek Row parties, but it’s still pretty wild.

As we walk farther into the house, we’re greeted with loud music and guys ziplining down the stairs. I search out one of the hosts to let them know what’s going on.As if they don’t already know. Unfortunately, they’re all occupied...either grinding against some dude’s groin ormaking outagainst some dude’s groin. That’sa lost cause.

“These girls really know how to throw a party!” Hunter yells as he grabs a girl and disappears into the kitchen.

Rolling my eyes, I’m walking into the living room when a girl immediately stops in front of me. Leia. She looks all sorts of anxious and nervous. My eyes zero in on the cute, tight number on her. A short, pink dress that hugs her in the best places. With her nervous smile, she looks adorable right now.
