But perhaps he was right. Girls reallydodisappoint you. Even if they don’t intend to.

I hate that my father was right.

I hate that this is how I’m choosing to spend my holidays, wallowing in my frat living room.

I hate that she has the ability to make me cry.

I look like a pathetic mess right now, crying over a damn girl.

Again, she’s not just any girl, Larson.

She’smygirl. She’ll always be my girl in my head. But it hurts that she doesn’t feel the same.

LATE FEBRUARY

LEIA

The holidays passed in a jiffy, and now there’s no incentive to be in a happy spirit.

It’s life as we know it: school, training, meets, hanging out with friends, and then repeat. It’s like clockwork, really. The good news is that Taya and I are on good terms. I was being dramatic, and Sarah was being a den mother yet again, telling me to get over myself.

“The girl misses you, Leia. Stop being a freaking baby and forgive her already.”

That was my cue to live by the old adage ‘forgive and forget.’ It took me a while to finally forgive after Sarah urged me to, but I eventually gave in after we hung out on Valentine’s Day.

Now it’s life as usual. And it kind of...feels weird. Nick and I are good friends again.

“What are you thinking about?” His voice interrupts my thoughts. We’re sitting on my couch in the communal area. I look down at the iced vanilla latte that he brought me that I have yet to drink. “Don’t make me think I wasted my money, Leia,” he tries to joke. I give him a playful glare before mockingly sipping from my straw. “There you go, good girl.”

I just roll my eyes, making him laugh. “You’re kind of lame, Nick.” This makes him laugh harder. “You bring me a latte and act like a weirdo in the process. What a great way to restart our friendship.”

His smile softens as he looks at me. “I’ve really missed you though, Leia. When I say I’m so sorry about what I did—”

“Nick, let’s try not to revisit the past, all right? I’ve missed you too.” He gives me a small smile. “Now what movie are we gonna watch?” He rubs his hands mischievously before turning to the TV and putting on a horror movie. The 1978 Halloween classic. He knows my tastes, and I love it. You can never go wrong with a classic.

It’s almost the end of the first quarter of spring semester, and I’m so happy about it. This was such a rough year, I’m just ready for it to be over. That’s not to say the second quarter won’t be bad. Call me a pessimist, but there always seems to be something eventful waiting for me around the corner. This first quarter went by pretty smoothly. No drama, just schoolwork and placing at my meets.

“What are your plans for spring break?” Nick asks during lunch at his dorm. We have one more week of finals, and then we’reofffor a week. I have absolutely nothing planned.

“I was so focused on this quarter, I didn’t even think about what I’m gonna do.” I laugh in embarrassment.

He laughs at me before running his hands through his hair. “Leave it to you, Leia, to work your life away.” He stares at me for a few seconds before clearing his throat. “Well...before I ask you what I want to, I have something for you.”

He gives me a small smile before getting up and disappearing into the kitchen, only to reappear with a small box. My heart beats faster. What the hell couldthatbe?

“Nick...what is that?” If he’s about to do what Ithinkhe’s going to do, I might faint. He has a nervous smile on his face, in turn makingmenervous. “Nick?”

“Leia, I’m so glad you chose to forgive me. You’re a special girl, which means you deserve special things. So I want to ask you, will you—”

“Nick...”

“...accept my friendship necklace?”

My eyes widen at that, and I suddenly feel a sense of relief. He slowly opens the box, revealing a diamond-studded necklace.

“Nick...it’s beautiful.” His smile grows, and he takes it out, giving me a better view of the necklace. There’s a small locket. He opens it, showing me a picture we took together from freshman year of high school. I look up at him, meeting his happy eyes. “The first time we met.”

He slowly nods. “The first day I knew I would fall in love with you.”
