“Leia...are you okay, doll?”

She’s still not looking up, but she lets out an exasperated sigh. I’m tempted to hug her, but I don’t know if I’m prepared for her reaction.

“You know...there are so many things I can handle. I just really had to get that off my chest.”

I don’t want her to have to feel like she needs to explain anything to me. “It’s okay. But Leia, what the fuck? You think I cheated on you? Where did that come from?”

“Stop it, Larson,” she whispers. Her voice is somewhat raspy now from crying. “We can’t work,” she croaks, making me flinch.

“What the fuck doesthatmean?”

She sighs, picking up a rock and throwing it. “We’re too...different, Jake. Look at me and then look at you.”

I frown at that. “I don’t get it, babe. What are you trying to say here?”

“Jacob Larson, man of my dreams.” She briefly looks at me. “You’re every girl’s prince. The guy that every girl fantasizes about when they’re little.”

I swallow. “Then you have your prince,” I whisper. I lean in to kiss her, but she pushes me away. Again. “Leia—”

“Jake,we’re too different. Even if we continue dating, then what? I’m just a short-term girlfriend?”

I flinch at that. What the hell? Is that what she thinks I see her as? “No fucking way. I’ve never seen you as a short-term thing. Where is this coming from?”

“I’ve never seen you as a short-term thing either. But...something tells me you’ll find a girl better than me. A girl that’s...morecompatiblewith you,” she mutters. She looks up at me with a confused expression. “Jake, I can’t compete with those girls. I’ll never be the girl-next-door. I just never will.”

“Leia, this is ridiculous. You’remygirl-next-door. Why are you saying this?”

“I am to you, but not everyone else.”

I cock an eyebrow at that. “Last time I checked, I was dating you and only you. Who the fuck cares what others see you as?Ifthat’s even true. Tons of guys find you attractive.”And I will hurt every one of them if they touch you.

She shakes her head in frustration. “I’m hot enough to sleep with. Not to be a girlfriend. I’m not good enough for you, Jake. You’ll find another girl you’re into. It just happens.” She shrugs.

“Leia, you just called me a prince,” I try to joke. “I’m here, telling you I want you. What the fuck more can I do?”

“Nothing, Jake. The future is so uncertain, and that scares me. You want me now, but that’ll change.”

“Leia—”

“Youarea prince, Jake. But girls that look like me don’t get that storybook ending,” she says softly. “I really hope you’ll find what you’re looking for, Jake. You deserve to find someone who you’re happy with.”

“I have, babe. With you.” At this rate, I feel like I’m begging. She’s giving up on things too easily.

“I won’t stand for competition. So...we should just not even try anymore.”

I freeze. “Leia, baby, please don’t do this...”

She kisses me on the cheek and slowly gets up. “You’ll always have my heart, Jake.”

And just like that, she disappears down the street.

LEIA

I walked away from Jake Larson two days ago.

There’s no way I can see him again. I just aired out my insecurities on him, and that alone should make him want to avoid me for the rest of his life. At the same time, I don’t regret what I said. It’s essentially the truth. I’m not Jake’s type. I’m not evenNick’stype. It’s best if I didn’t waste my time.

I should be angry at Nick. He’s brought me to this state in my life where I overthink everything that happens to me. I basically told Jake Larson that we would never work out because we look different. This stems not only from my insecurities, but also from the fact that the girls Nick shows attention to are girls that look nothing like me.
