Something tells me we aren’t talking about their affair anymore.

“Yeah...maybetoomuch passion.” Maybe she’ll understand where I’m coming from. We’re too passionate; there’snoway that will translate well in a relationship again.

“Perhaps,” she says as she looks at me. I took a moment to admire her. “Perhaps people don’t know what they want anymore. Perhaps...the idea of passionate love has disintegrated over time...much like relationships.”

I feel that jab in my chest. “Perhaps it has. But some peopledoview love as old-fashioned.” I’m packing it on way too thick, I know. But something’s gotta give.

“People also don’t open themselves up to explore the feeling.” Another jab thrown my way. I deserve that. She then walks up to the painting and runs her small fingers over it. If only I could tell what she was thinking. “These violent delights have violent ends.” She then looks into my eyes, a piercing gaze. “Very telling, isn’t it?” I hold her gaze...and see my girl.

“Babe—”

“And these delights...end with us.” She leans in to kiss my cheek, and I can only savor it. She tries to walk away, but I grab her before she can.Not just yet.

“Baby, when will we see each other again? At least give me that.”

She smiles and chuckles to herself in thought as she looks at our joined hands. I bring her hand up to mine and kiss it, rubbing my cheek against it.

“You know, I was actually thinking about that same question. One part of me wants to say, ‘Maybe someday.’” My breath hitches. The ‘maybe’ reignites my fears again.

“Allie...” I whisper.

“But now I think...maybe not.”

My heart stops beating as time stands still. Thishasto be a joke. But then Ireallylook at her. She’s not joking.

She smiles a small smile and leaves me as I stand looking after her. Never have I met a girl with the power to make me think about my life choices. But that’s just it; she’s not just a girl. She’s a woman.Mywoman. I gulp as I continue watching her go through the exit.

Sarah and Taya suddenly reappear, following my gaze to the door.

“Jake?” Taya’s voice breaks into my thoughts. I clear my throat, stuff my hands in my pockets, and inch away from them.

“Thank you, guys, for this. But this was a waste of my time,” I choke out.

I can’t even recognize my own voice anymore.

I walk away from them, doing my best to look ahead.
