LATE APRIL

Our 4x100-meter relay teamdominatedcollegiate championships. And that was after I got my focus back.

I never thought we’d medal at state asfreshmen. Especially after the year I’ve had. We finished the season successfully, though. We finished it pretty extraordinarily, actually. I don’t want to brag, but...we got the first-place medal!

We got back to campus that night, and I was caught off-guard when there was a surprise party for us in the hockey arena. It was strange when Coach escorted us to the arena. My anxiety raised each step we took toward it. I was nervous to see what I was going to find there.

So when I saw Nick and the cross-country boys in front of a buffet table, juice keg, and balloons, I was pleasantly surprised. Finally, something good out of the last month.

“Congratulations, girls,” Nick says, his eyes finding mine.

The girls are squealing and cheering behind me as I mouth aThank youto Nick. He winks back at me.This is what we needed. I walk up and give him a hug. He hugs me tight.

He suddenly pulls back, looking in my eyes. “Congratulations, Leia. I’m so happy for you,” he whispers.

I give him a small smile, earning one back. We have a brief staring contest as we ignore the world around us.

What. Is. Happening?

One of us has to say something because this is weird. He opens his mouth to say something, but Taya interrupts our world.

“Nick, oh my gosh, thank you somuchfor this!” Her squeals instantly ruin the little moment we had.Why was there a moment to begin with?Clearing my throat, I step out of his arms. I don’t miss the sad look he gives when I do. “The only thing that’s missing is the booze!”

Rolling my eyes, I grab her hands. “Taya,” I whine. Alcohol is thelastthing she needs right now.

“What? It’s not much of a celebration without a buzz,” she whines back.

Shaking my head, I walk with her to a bench in the lobby. She gives me an annoyed sigh and slouches down. It’s like dealing with a little sister.

“Do you really think you need to drink again? After what happened?” I shouldn’t be guilting her. Ireallyshouldn’t. But we do the crappiest things when we’re under the influence.

Her eyes widen at what I’m alluding to. “Leia...are we still on that?” Sighing, I sit down next to her. “I wasn’t gonna drink myself to a stupor, Leia. I just wanted...to celebrate with my team, you know?”

She’s right; I’m being stupid. “You’re right, I’m being silly.” But am I? I’m clearly not over akiss. It was a freaking kiss, and I’m acting like they’ve had a full-on affair. “Go enjoy. We won!” I fake enthusiasm.

But she can’t tell. She smiles and squeals before giving me a hug. She gets up and walks to talk to the girls. I need to stop getting in my head.

The Next Morning...

Why is this the story of my life? I have yetanotherheadache waking up in bed. I didn’t evendrinklast night, so that excuse is out. Groaning, I slowly raise my head. I’m about out of Tylenol, so these headaches after a night out will have to stop. I swing my legs over my bed and realize I’m wearing someone’s oversized shirt. What the hell?

A light snore from my side startles me. My eyes find a guy sleeping next to me. My heartbeat speeds up as I try to figure out what’s going on. Surely I didn’t sleep with anyone last night. That’s not even my M.O. I do feel sore, though. Shit.

Turning back to him, I see that his head is covered with a pillow.Well, that doesn’t help. The guy is shirtless, and he’s sort of...thin. He’s definitely not one of the hockey guys, then.

For Christ’s sake, Leia, you just give attention toanyguy now?

I’m scared to discover who’s next to me. I slowly move to pull back the pillow, but the guy moves his head farther into it.

That was a lost cause, too. It doesn’t matter now. I just need to get out of here. Looking around the room, I can tell it’s not even my room anyway. Thisshirtisn’t even mine. It is a nice shirt, though.Focus, Leia. Abort whosever room this is.

It takes me a few minutes to find my shoes and clothes, but I grab them immediately and leave. How did I end up here? There were literallynodrinks at the party.

Unless I was drugged?

But who would freaking drug me?
