Kris is convinced I owe her $20 since I lost our bet.

She was right all along. I finished my classes and passed them all today. Grades were released, and I’ve just found out I’m graduating Magna Cum Laude.

That’s pretty darn good.

I’d pat myself on the back, but again, I’m not in the happiest spirit right now. Things just feel out of whack.

Kris still opts to treat me to dinner tonight. It feels weird going out with a girl when it’s not considered a date. Months ago, Kris was just a friend that I liked screwing. Now I can’t picture anyone else besides Leia that I’d like to screw.

Leia. I wonder how her last few days of school are going. She definitely doesn’t want to talk to me, now that the loser screwed with her head. I can’t bring myself to talk to her again. I graduate tomorrow, and Draft Day is in a few weeks. I need to move on with my life...no matter how hard it’ll be.

I’m fixing my tie in the bathroom when Hunter walks in, beer in hand, and slouches down in my chair. Our last day on campus is tomorrow. We’re due to move out after graduation, and that just sucks. We spent four years in this frat. We have so many memories in this frat. Here I am, going all nostalgic. I’d be fooling myself if I said I won’t miss my college days. What will I do if I don’t get drafted? That thought is a blow to my chest.

“You look sharp, dude,” he says, clicking his tongue and taking a swig.

“I do what I can.”

He chuckles at this. “What’s your plan for after graduation, dude? You said no team is interested in you.”

“I don’t know,” I groan. “I don’t have any jobs lined up. Maybe I’ll try to be an assistant hockey coach or some shit.” I give him an amused look, and he bursts out laughing.

“Nah, dude, I think you’re just selling yourself short,” he drawls. “Everyone knows you’re getting drafted by a top team. Who gives a shit if you smoked weed and did some shrooms? Almost everyone does that in college.”

While I’m thankful for the words of encouragement, he’s ignoring the simple fact that no coach has gotten back to me since my last meeting.

“Maybe you’re right, maybe you’re not,” I retort. “Whatever happens happens, I guess. I’m not gonna lose sleep over it.”

I might. But I can move on if the worst-case scenario occurs.

The Olive Bistro is definitely happening tonight. I’ve never eaten here outside of catering for one of our hockey classics back in sophomore year. It’s a casual fine dining restaurant with an intimate setting.

“Kris, what made you choose this place?” I can’t help but to chuckle.

She gives me a silly look. “Their food is good,” she responds simply.

We order some bruschetta and a bottle of Cabernet to celebrate the end of college. We’re onto a new world of adulting, and I’m not sure if I’m prepared for it.

“What are your plans after college?” I never asked her. I immediately feel bad.

“I’m not sure yet. I’ve been reaching out to different marketing firms to do graphic design, and I have a few interviews lined up. I’m still building my portfolio, so it’s difficult.” She graduated Summa Cum Laude.Go figure. Kris has always been a smart girl, so of course she’s bound to worksomewheresoon.

For the next hour, we finish up our dinner and the bottle of wine. Although weird at first, it was nice to have dinner with someone. I figured maybe I could explore something with Kris, but the feelings just aren’t there. It’s more friendly chemistry than anything.

“Thank you for dinner,” I say.

She gives me a small smile before nodding. We get up to leave, but I find myself shooting back into my chair when I see something that breaks my heart all over again.

Kris gives me a concerned look. “Jake?” She turns and follows my gaze to Leia and Nick.

This. Fucking. Bites.

LEIA

Nick has, unsurprisingly, yet to explain why he lied to me about Jake.

Therefore, he has, yet again, wasted my time. What did you expect?I keep falling for these traps, and I’m starting to get annoyed with myself. Now that I’ve come out to dinner with him, I’m easily reminded that Nick is boring. I’mbored. Like this charred meat on my plate.
