“You look really nice tonight,” he says for the umpteenth time. I look down at the white tank top and shorts I’m wearing.Yeah. Nice.

“Thanks...”

We sit there in annoying silence as I move the brisket around my plate.

“Are you having a good time?”

I came to dinner because you promised to tell me what the hell happened.

Before I can answer just that, I notice the one and only Jake Larson, staring at me across the way. He’s sitting with...Kris. She’s talking to him, but his eyes look between me and Nick. Shit. Now he’s mad. I look back to Nick, and he looks at me, confused.Wait, he asked me a question.

“This meat...is tasty.”

Lame. I look back at the table, and Jake’s already up and making his way to our table. I look at Nick and see he’s looking at the same thing. Shit. This whole thing is so dramatic, and it’s not helping that Jake’s giving me that look that could melt my blood. I swallow as he stops at our table.

“Can we help you?”

I close my eyes in embarrassment. Jake just looks at us both before his eyes finally land on me.

“Leia. You look beautiful tonight,” he says blandly. I feel my face warm as I smile and look at Nick. He doesn’t look very happy. “And man, you’re a very lucky guy.” My heart melts right then. He gives us both a small smile as he leaves, and Kris follows suit, winking at me.

Oh man, what have I done?

JAKE

I knew it. I knew I’d be a jealous asshole.

But I couldn’t help it. She was beautiful. She curled her hair like she usually did, waves falling over her shoulders. And while she was only wearing a tank and shorts, the effortless look was gorgeous on her.

I’d been staring at her while Kris was lecturing me about growing a pair and talking to her. I wasn’t sure how she was going to react, seeing as Nick had brainwashed her about what I think about her.

I say goodbye to Kris and head for my car.

“Larson!” I stop to turn and see a running Allie. Why does she do this to me?

“You can’t run in those shoes,” I say. She stops before me and smiles. “You look beautiful tonight, doll. A real stunner.”

She smiles even brighter. “Thank you.”

We just stand there in silence.God, I miss her.

But she doesn’t want me. And though it hurts like hell to know that, I have to move on.

“Well...I guess I’ll see you around,” I say, turning to leave.

“That’s it?” she asks, a sad tone in her voice.Let me walk away, babe.

“What?”

“That’s all you’re going to say?”

I look around to figure out what’s happening, but her face grows expectant. “I don’t understand,” I chuckle.

“You don’t understand?” she asks suggestively.

I gulp, finally understanding what she’s wanting. And I can’t give it to her. “That’s what I said, doll,” I whisper to her. She has to understand that this is painful for me.

“After everything we went through, all you have to say is‘you look beautiful’?”
