The only gesture I can give in return is a friendly nod. Her smile is replaced with a slight frown, and I’m instantly mourning that smile. Shit, this is going to be a rough night.
LEIA
He’s no longer giving me that look that he used to give.
The look that indicated he liked what he saw. The look that replaces it is a look of unfamiliarity. This Jake doesn’t belong to me. This Jake appears as if I’m just an average sorority girl. And seeing that Jake breaks my heart.
“Jake doesn’t look too happy to see me,” I say jokingly.
Taya gives me a nervous smile while Sarah gives her a pointed look. “There might be a reason for that.”
My eyebrows raise at that. “Meaningwhatexactly?” The drama does not stop in my life lately.
She clears her throat and shares a look with Sarah. “I was under the impression you told Jake that you were off to New York this summer...”
The blood rushes out of my face. I close my eyes, annoyed.
“Please don’t tell me you told him.” I was trying to avoid telling him. Jake is hyper dramatic. He doesn’t handle news like that well. Especially after he told me he loved me.He’s your friend, though. It shouldn’t matter.If only that was true.
“He asked where you were earlier today, and I told him you were preparing for your trip,” she admits ruefully.
I try to find him in the crowd, but he’s already gone. I silently curse as I bring my gaze back to Taya’s. “I...can’t even be upset,” I sigh. I don’t have the emotional energy to care anymore. He wants to be mad at me, so fucking be it. I just wanted to come tonight because the girls invited me, and I wanted to congratulate the boys. If Jake’s going to act like a baby all night, that might cut my night short. “So what’d he say?”
“Nothing of value, really,” she laughs. “You know Jake. He gets upset about silly things, and then eventually he gets over it.”
“Let’s just hope he gets over it in time for me to say goodbye,” I say to myself.
I planned on saying goodbye since I’ll be away. I’ve never met a more sensitive guy in my life.
If that doesn’t make me love him more...I don’t know what does.
Jake isdefinitelyavoiding me tonight. If I didn’t know three hours ago, I know now. He disappears into thin air and then appears with a beer in hand, dancing with the guys.
I’m sitting on the couch, watching him, whenKrissuddenly appears. I roll my eyes as she sits down next to me, smiling. She doesn’t let up.
“You’re like a roach,” I growl.
“And you’re like a grumpy elf. What else is new?”
I don’t know why I’m so mean to her. She slept with Jake I don’t know how long ago, but she hasn’t done anything with him recently. That I know of, anyway.
“Sorry, that was uncalled for,” I moan.
She laughs, shaking her head. “No worries, girly. I had sex with your man, so your frustration with me makes sense,” she admits with a smile.
“Yeah, it seems like everyone’s sleeping with everybody lately,” I mumble.
Her head whips to me with a sad smile. “I heard,” she groans. “Your ex? He cheated on you, didn’t he?” A chill runs up my spine at the mention ofsaid-ex. “Are you okay?”
I hadn’t thought about it since yesterday. I put it off until I can figure out what my evidence is. At this rate, it’s my word against his. And, judging by his rich parents, his word is a lot more powerful than mine.
“Um...yeah,” I say, forcing a smile.
Her frown grows as she turns to me. “Leia...?” I don’t see her letting this go.Ican barely let it go. I swallow as my face heats. “Leia, you’re freaking me out, girl. What’s wrong?”
Kris has never given me a reason to not trust her. She’s responsible for a lot of closure I’d gotten with Jake. Sighing, I look around, hoping Taya and Sarah aren’t around. I’m not ready to tell them yet.
“So this is off the record,” I whisper. Her eyebrows raise, moving closer. “Please don’t say anything to anyone.”
