“Jake, I’m so sorry. I-I’m not supposed to be here,” she says, pushing against my arms, forcing me to put her down. She frantically wipes her face. “I’m so, so sorry, Jake. I didn’t mean to interrupt your night.”

“Baby, you didn’t interrupt a damn thing. What’s the matter?” She stops crying but chokes up a cry. It breaks my heart to see her like this. I search through my head to find a solution to fix this. “Leia, baby, talk to me. What’s wrong?”

“I-I...it’s nothing, Jake. I’m so sorry.” And with that, she goes out the door of my frat.

LEIA

I’m such an idiot.

And me showing up at his frat proves it. I shouldn’t have done it. And yet I did. I showed up to the bastard’s frat, and he’s probably wonderingwhat the hell?

I didn’t mean to kiss him. I didn’t mean to drive to campus alone. I didn’t even mean to pull up to his fraternity. I just wanted to go to the beach. It was as if I were hypnotized or under the influence. Okay, maybe I was a bit under the influence. I drank two Moscow mules. Maybe three. Either way, what I did was completely uncalled for, and I really need to apologize for acting weird.Never show your crazy to a cute guy again.

But it’sJake Larson. Even drunk, I could’ve done worse.Somuch worse. But him. He has such a strange effect on me. Yeah, he’s hot. But so is virtually every California guy. And yet I’ve never had the urge to walk up to any of them and practically devour their mouths. Maybe it’s the fact he’s built like a sexy lumberjack. Maybe it’s his stubble—I’m a sucker for a stubble. But it’s got to be the fact that he’s charming. All of these things are on the surface. And yet...it can’t be the only reason I’m so attracted to him.

I needed to take my mind off of it. And the only way to do that was running. Clearing my head for the day. Forgetting what an ass Nick is. Thinking of ways to apologize to Jake for being a freaking weirdo. This is precisely the opposite of clearing your head, stupid.

Frustrated with myself, I just opt for a day with Taya and Sarah. Running won’t do the trick. We pull up to Ronni’s Pie for a girls’ lunch.

“Out of all the places, Leia,” Sarah mocks. Pizza is a comfort food. What can I say?

“Why are you so anti-pizza?” I ask. She laughs this off as we walk into the bustling pizza shop. Rows of college students fill the booths. I guess this is their busier period.

“I’m not ‘anti-pizza.’ I just thought you wanted something healthier to eat, track star.”

She’s got a point. Now they’re probably wondering if there’s something wrong.

“It never hurts to have a cheat day once in a while.”

They both seem to buy this. Thankfully.

We’re brought over to a booth by the hostess, and I look over the many choices of pizza slices there are. Even the weird specialty pizzas.Popcorn chicken. Vanilla Sundae. Chocolate Pie.Jeez...who the hell eats pizza of these flavors?

“Leia...these flavors honestly sound super gross,” Taya says, voicing my thoughts.

“Yeah, I sort of missed the mark on choosing a place,” I say, scrolling the menu. There has to be a simple pepperoni slice. It’s a pizza shop, for Christ’s sake. Our waiter comes up, and we settle for a popcorn chicken pie. Never know how something is until you try it. When he walks away, Taya does not waste time.

“Obviously there’s something wrong. You wouldn’t bring us to a weird pizza shop for no reason. Out with it.”

How do I tell them I did a dumb thing? In their eyes, it might not be dumb. But I basically cheated on my boyfriend.

“I left Nick’s party super early last night because we got into an argument. When I left, I drove back to Malibu, and I took a pit stop.” I pause for dramatic effect, hoping they get my point. But they both stare at me like I have three heads. I really don’t want to have to spell this out for them. “I stopped at Jake Larson’s fraternity.”

“No you did not!” Sarah gasps, and Taya squeals.

“What happened?! You guys did the deed?”

I frown. “No, we didn’t have sex. But...we made out. And itcould’veled to sex.”

Taya squeals, and Sarah starts talking about how she knew there was something going on between us.

“So why didn’t it lead to sex?” Taya asks. I really hope that’s not a real question.

“Because I have a boyfriend? And getting involved with Larson would be an idiotic move.” Averyidiotic move.

“Why would it be idiotic? He’s hot, and every girl on campus knows that.”

“Exactly. I refuse to be another notch on his belt.”
