“Dude, you go through girls like beer bottles.”

I sarcastically laugh at his joke and take another swig. “No harm has ever come from admiring a girl’s body.”

“Really? So you don’t want her then.” I freeze because he knows he’s got me. He just shakes his head, chuckling, and begins tossing the beach ball to the guys as they walk back down the stairs. What an asshole.

LEIA

I am a girl.

A girl who knows what she wants. Earn a track scholarship. Study software engineering. Make loads of money and live comfortably. Perhaps even build my own operating system if I’m ambitious enough. But what Ididn’tknow I wanted—nor did I expect—was to come in contact with attention from the male species. I was always friends with guys growing up. I was a tomboy. It might make me sound like apick-megirl, but it’s the simple truth. But now that I’ve been weightlifting and running more frequently, my body’s become more...shapely.

“How do I get your ass?” One of my friends Sarah asks so bluntly. Case in point.

She asks me this as I inch—oh-so carefully—farther into the water. The waves look considerably larger and more intense today, so I’m not exactly jumping up and down to get in. I just stand there, satisfied with where I’m standing; just enough that my ankles are covered.

“It’s called squats.” She playfully rolls her eyes at my snarky comment because she knows I’m pissy.

I’ve told them many times I can’t swim, yet they still try to lure me into the water. I don’t know how many times I can tell them this. They all rush past me to get in. Annoyed, I try to distract myself by getting a drink.

Approaching my beach bag, I see a bunch of girls walking up to the group of those hot guys. They’re all flirting...yuck. If only I had their confidence to blatantly approach guys. I hate seeing PDA. I guess that’s what all guys want, anyway. Well...except one.

The one that keeps staring at me like I’m different from everyone else. To be fair, I am. I’ve been in the sun for nearly a week training at Rubenstein, so my skin does look a little darker than its normal chestnut color. But...he’s staring as if he likes what he sees. He has a girl on his back, but he’s still staring at me. The first time, I didn’t even notice until Sarah said something. I turned around, and he was staring. All I could do was smile back.

His skin is so tan, the blue-striped trunks so bright against it. He has a slight stubble with shaggy hair. He looks like a lumberjack. It’s when one of the girls whispers in his ear that I grow irritated and turn back to the water. Screw those girls.Be less of a hater, Leia.

Taya motions for me to come back in. Sighing, I walk back, gulping as I see five-foot waves close in on the shore. She stays with me a little while to tell me to just jump over some of the waves. I do it, and then she leaves me as if I’ve learned how to swim. Groaning, I walk in a little bit.I wonder if that girl is still on his back.

I turn around once again and see her clear as day as he tosses a beach ball to one of his friends.

“Leia, watch out!” Taya yells in the distance. She screams something else unintelligible, causing me to lose focus of what’s happening. Suddenly, I feel myself swallowing water as I fall with a thump. And then suddenly, the world is pitch black.
