“Not much, just wanted to hear your voice.” Not a lie at all. “I’m at the bar right now with the guys, and I just wanted to check in on you.”

Her laugh greets me. “Thanks, Dad. I’m fine. Just catching up on more homework.” She sounds so tired. Like a girl who doesn’t even know what rest means.

“Why don’t you come to the bar? It’s just me and the guys.”Anythingto have her near me tonight. I know I said we don’t need to hang out every day, but fuck me, I’m having withdrawals.

“While that sounds tempting, I don’t think I can make it out tonight. This workset is kicking my ass, and I have a meet tomorrow. So I think I’ll catch you another time.”

I let out a sigh. “Fine, you’re off the hook tonight. But you’re mine next weekend. Do you have any plans?” I’m not sure how I’ll react if she says ‘yes.’

“I don’t know yet. Sarah or Taya might want to hang out. Or Nick. Can I let you know this coming week?”

She’s ready to get off the phone. My feelings would be hurt if it weren’t for the fact that she’s busy.

Sighing, I accept my defeat. “Sure, doll. I’ll leave you to it then. Don’t stress out too much. Talk soon.”

“Talk to you soon, Jake. Have fun.”

With that, she hangs up, and I already miss her. It’s nice to just talk to her. It feels...natural.

She clouds my thoughts on the way to the booth. Is she alone tonight?Or is she with Nick? It’s not any of my business either way. She has a life, and I can’t keep trying to hijack it for my personal benefit. No matter how much I’m tempted to.

I grab the drinks from the bar and walk them back to the booth, waddling between the active crowd on the dance floor. Once I make it back to the booth, I set the drinks down. They’re talking about some girl as I sit.Of course they are.

“Yeah, she has a hot rack for a freshman,” Brock admits. Who the hell are they talking about?

“Dude, you’re telling me. It seems like every year, the freshman girls get hotter and hotter.” Brock and Hunter let out a howl. My head hurts way too much for this. I’m exhausted from weights. I could be in my room, watching tapes right now.

“Who are you guys talking about?” They couldn’t be talking about Leia because they know what happens when they talk about her when I’m around.

“That hot little freshman, Taya. That tan and those legs?” Hunter lets out a whistle to drive his point home. I’m not sure how I feel about them talking about Leia’s friend. She’s definitely a cute girl, but...let’s face it, Hunter’s a pig.

“I hope you’re not thinking what Ithinkyou’re thinking.” Because that would just be simply idiotic.

Hunter just winks at me, earning a laugh from Brock. This is what these idiots talk about when I’m not around. I didn’t even know they noticed her. Brock seems like he’d be more into the redheaded.

“Don’t need to think it. I’ve already hit it.” My head whips up at that. What the fuck does that mean?

“You’ve hitwhatexactly?” I ask, hoping I’m misunderstanding him. That would not go well if he actually slept with her.

Imagine this: They sleep together, Hunter hurts her, Taya gets sad, Leia becomes mad on behalf of her friend, Leia gets angry at Hunter for being an asshole, I get the boot because I’m guilty by association, I’ll have to beat Hunter’s ass, he’ll have to walk on crutches because of it, I get suspended, and the hockey team suffers. This issue needs to be fixed.

“Rosen, you need to nip that shit in the bud. Right now.”

I don’t need that drama right now. He gives me a look that says ‘over my dead body.’ That can be fucking arranged if he doesn’t get a hold of himself.

“Why? I’d be an idiot if I didn’t do anything.”You’d be an idiot if youdid.

“That’s Leia’s best friend, genius. If shit hits the fan, I’ll be on the receiving end of that.”

“Wow. Thanks for havingyourbest friend’s back, Larson. Look, it’s not that serious. I just think she’s hot. She had a great time and so did I.”

Something weird suddenly crosses his face. Mourning? Annoyance? For his sake, I just move on from the conversation and talk about the last game against Illyria.

We’re about three drinks into the night when a familiar face shows up. Leia’s loser boyfriend shows up, and my blood already boils. He’s standing at the bar, looking over the crowd, seemingly looking for someone.Leia, no doubt. But wait...she would’ve told me if she was showing up tonight. Had she lied on the phone? I look over the crowd to find her until I see a blonde strut up to Nick. She looks familiar. I think she’s a sophomore. Savannah? No, Stephanie?

He smiles and hugs her...a little tootightfor my liking. What the fuck? When he pulls back from hugging her, they talk before he leans in. And kisses her. I flinch at the sight.

“Whoa. Dude...that sucks.” I already know Brock is looking in the same direction. It’s like a bad car accident; you can’t look away from what the hell is happening. Why the fuck is he kissing a random girl at the bar? And where is Leia? And why am I not surprised?Itoldher he wasn’t good enough for her. I knew there was something odd about this guy. But I’ll be honest...I wasnotexpecting this. Who the hell cheats onLeia? I couldn’t fathom eventhinkingabout cheating on her. “You’re not honestly sitting there thinking about it, are you?”
