“Oh yeah? Wanna test that theory?”

Taya, Hunter, and Brock then appear at my side.

“Larson, dude, come on. Let’s just go. She’s not in her right mind right now. We know if she were sober, she wouldn’t have even let the bastard touch her. Come on.” Again, Hunter makes a good point. We have another stare-off before I finally relent.

“Whatever. Just stay the fuck away from her, dude.”

He rolls his eyes at me again, but I know he’s still scared. I look around for Leia. When I spot her at the booth, I walk over and reach for her hand. She pipes up when she sees me.

“Jakey!”

Yeah, it’s time to get her back to the dorm. I shouldn’t be mad at her. Ican’tbe mad at her. She’s drunk. But seeing her grind against him and close to doing a striptease pissed me off. No matter how mad I am at her, though, I can’t bring her back to the dorm when she’s like this. Taya and Sarah are staying at the frat house tonight, so I guess she will be too.

LEIA

I guzzle down a bottle of water on the way back to campus.

Not by choice, obviously. Jake is making me drink tons of it. I’m only semi-aware of where I am right now, to be fair. I’m moving, and I feel a bit tipsy. I look at Jake, and I can’t help but wonder why he has such an angry look on his face.

He hasn’t looked or talked to me since we left the bar. Not that I could blame him; I’m pretty sure I smell like a sewer. Still, I don’t appreciate his little silent treatment. So when he stops in front of the frat house, I look his way.

“What, you can’t look at me now?” I joke, but we both know I’m not joking.

His agitated expression tells me as much. “Happy now?”

Okay, he’s pissed. Time for some damage control...hopefully.

“Why would I be happy to see my friend acting upset with me?”

And just like that, a switch turns on. He shuts his car door and faces me, angry. “First of all, I’m not ‘acting’ like anything. Second of all, call me your friend one more time, and I’m dropping you forever.”

My heart cracks, making me shift backward. I’ve never seen him this angry. I have no idea what’s happening.

“So I’m not your friend now?” He rolls his eyes at that. Well...that stings.

“I have so many friends, Leia, I don’t need a new one, all right? I have plenty of friends. I don’t want to be your fucking friend,” he grits out before walking up to his frat.

“So what do you want?” I have no choice but to follow him, but his scoff makes me angrier. “Why are you mad at me, Jake?” He looks at me then and searches my face.

“Why am I mad?” he says to himself as he closes his eyes. “Why am I mad? You let that prick touch you in places that I’ll probablyneverbe able to touch you, and you ask me why I’m mad.” He chuckles to himself as if it’s a joke. And I can instantly see what this was about. Jake Larson is jealous. But of who? I don’t even know who I was dancing with.

“Jake...you’re jealous of some random guy?”

He cocks an eyebrow at me. “Random guy? Leia...you let Nicktouchyou.Afterhe cheated on you. So yeah, excuse me if I’m abitjealous and pissed off,” he snarls.

A shiver runs up my spine, and I gulp, replaying what he just said in my head.“I let Nick touch me? When?” I wouldn’t let the bastard touch me with a ten-inch pole.

He looks at me like I’m insane.“At the fucking bar, Leia. You weregrindingagainst him. For fuck’s sake, you’re not drinking anymore.” He runs a hand through his hair, frustrated. This night isn’t going how I wanted it to. I didn’t want to fight with him. I sigh and draw in breath.

“Jake—”

Suddenly, he rushes me, and now we’re a few inches apart.

“Look, I don’t want to be your friend, Leia. I have plenty of those,” he says softly, looking into my eyes. I gulp, noticing the hungry look in his eyes.

“So what do you want?” I try again. I already know the answer, but I just want to hear him say it.

The look he gives says it all. “For you to take what I feel seriously.”
