“I don’t know if she’s a supermodel or not, but she’s super beautiful. It was a bit...humbling.”

“Were they actuallyflirting? Or were you just being your typical Leia self?”

I look at Sarah, confused. “I don’t get what you mean. ‘My typical Leia self’?”

“He could’ve just been having a friendly chat with the girl. Didn’t you say you guys were on FaceTime just before you saw him?”

“Yes, Sarah, we were on FaceTime. Your point?”

“Then you’re just being silly. It’s obvious Jake likes you. He asked you to travel with him overseas, for Christ’s sake. Start seeing yourself in a positive light, Leia.”

I’m close to telling her how silly she sounds when the door opens. My heart skips a beat when I see Jake peek his head around it.

“Hey,” he says nervously, his gaze on mine. He gives me a small smile. I smile back. “Hey, ladies.”

“What’s up, Jake? Chatting up any more local girls?”

“Taya,” Sarah warns. Rolling my eyes, I nod at both of them. “We’re...gonna head out and give you guys some space.”

“What?! I thought we were doing room service and movies!”

I laugh at Taya’s whining. Sarah looks annoyed as she drags Taya off the bed and leaves the room.

Taya’s protests end shortly after the door shuts, and it’s just me and him. Jake’s visibly nervous as he throws his bag on the floor. I clear my throat and change the channel on the TV.

My gaze goes to his as he slowly sits down on the bed. “How was the gym?” I try to ask as friendly as possible, but I can’t help how it comes out.

“It was okay, but we decided to end it early.”

I frown. “Why? What happened?”

“Nothing happened. I just wanted to spend time with you tonight.” My heart swells. He makes it so hard to be mad at him, and it’s annoying. “Allie, it really wasn’t what it looked like downstairs, babe. We were just talking. She walked over to me and—”

“I know, Jake. It’s okay.”

He freezes, examining my face. “I’m serious, it was nothing.”

“Iknow, it’s okay. I promise.” I just want to put it all behind us. “I just felt...weird. She kind of looked like me...if I were shades lighter.”

He laughs at that, and so do I. “Yeah, but...you’regorgeous, babycakes. I love athletic brunettes with soft skin.” I chuckle at that. “I’m serious. You’re one of a kind.”

I look into his eyes and see intensity in them again. I narrow my eyes at him. “Not tonight, Jake,” I warn.

He gives me a sly grin. “I’m not sure what you mean, babe.”

I roll my eyes. Yeah, right. “We’re not doing what you’re thinking.”

He laughs and kisses me. “It was worth a try, wasn’t it?”

“It was. But get some sleep, babe. I might do some schoolwork before bed to get a head start.”

He groans his annoyance as he lies down. “You need sleep, too. You’ve been more active thananyof us in the last day.”

He’s right. But I don’t want to get behind on schoolwork. I promised Coach Venus I would stay caught up.

I give him a kiss and pull away when he tries to get another. “I’ll be fine, Larson. I promise.”

He rolls his eyes, slips his shirt off, and throws it on the ground. Shit. It’s a battle every night, trying to focus when he goes shirtless.
