“So you’re saying if you weren’t with me, you wouldn’t be here?”

Where is this coming from? Did I miss something in the last few days? “No, because you’re still myfriend, Allie. And Icareabout my friends.Youjust get special treatment because I’mwithyou too! What aren’t you getting?”

She stares for a few seconds before shaking her head. “This conversation is making me tired.”

I can’t help but scoff at that. “So I’m making you tired?”

“Larson, it doesn’t matter anymore, okay? I don’t have anything or anyone anymore, so I’m over it.”

Anyone? This bothers me more than it should. “What isthatsupposed to mean?”

“What do youthinkit means?” She’s glaring at me, clearly annoyed. I honestly missed something.

“Itsoundslike you’re saying you don’t have anyone.” Which I’m hoping was a mistake.

“That’s actuallyexactlywhat I said.”

That hurts. “So you don’t have anyone? Not evenme?” What is she getting at? Since when does she think she doesn’t have anyone? She has Taya, Sarah, and me.

“I don’t know,doI have you?” I raise my eyebrows at that. “We’re not even an official couple, Jake. You chatted with a blond Slovak woman in front of me. So, no, I’m not fully convinced that I can rely on you.”

I’m just going to assume this is her hurt talking. I wasn’t expecting this conversation tonight. Especially after the shit I’ve gone through in the last few weeks. What the hell is going on in Slovakia? “Leia...”

“Just put on a movie,” she says curtly. She doesn’t know if we’re an official couple? To be fair...neither doI. I never asked to be exclusive, and I never said the words ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend.’ I just assumed we were exclusive. But an official relationship was never talked about. So I can’t blame her for the confusion.

“What do you want from me?” It’s a loaded question. But I just want clarity.

“At the moment, I want you to put a movie on,” she bites out.

“Leia, please—”

“Larson, just be my friend for tonight, okay? Just be my friend.” Friend? That seems more telling than anything we’ve talked about in the last fifteen minutes.

We just had our first big argument. An argument that I’m pretty sure ended in a breakup.

Just be my friend for tonight.

What the hell just happened?

LEIA

Cheese fries are my best friend right now.

Sarah and Taya are great too, but cheese fries are so comforting. They’re there when I need them, and I don’t need to worry about them ever betraying me. And if I can’t run during the upcoming track season, then goddamn it, I will bask in cheese fries.

“Leia...you wanna leave some fries for the rest of us?”

We’re at a local bistro when Sarah decides to play comedian as Taya laughs. This is the first official time I’ve explored Bratislava. My birthday is tomorrow. So I wanted to get out, and the girls joined me so I wasn’t alone.

“Sorry! I’m just super hungry after spending a whole day crying.”

This makes them uncomfortable. They weren’t benched from the upcoming season, since they can juggle school work, workouts, and dating hockey players. I, on the other hand, am falling inlovewith a hockey player. And this in turn is messing up my workout schedule, tending to him while he’s injured.

“About that...Leia, we’re so sorry about what happened with track season—”

“It’s fine.” I don’t want to make a big deal out of it. If Coach Venus wants to be on my ass, so be it. I just want to enjoy my trip in Slovakia and forget all about it. They share a weird look. “Guys, please don’t make this a thing.”

“It’s okay to feel upset about it.”
