If hockey wasn’t gonna be the death of me…

I don’t know what will. I swear my thighs are about to burst. These intense workouts are killing me to no end, but the high it gives me has no parallel. I have to practically jostle to my car, as people praise me for how ‘great’ I did at practice. To this day, I will never understand why Coach made our practices open to students. I guess those are the perks of being the captain of a winning hockey team; people want to see what makes you win. But still, I need a break.

I am on the road driving to the frat, admiring the expanse campus ahead of me. Breaking me from my thoughts, I see a familiar feminine figure running down the road with earphones in. In the middle of the day. I smile to myself. These interactions are becoming way too dangerous. Every single time, I have to contain myself.

Should I stop or should I keep going? I gotta make a decision; I’m coming too close to her. Shit, what should I do?

Clearly not in sync with my brain, I stop, and she slows her running down. I can see the sweat on her. Glistening. Man, she’s gorgeous.Sogorgeous. And I’m fucked.

“Hey, stranger...”

“Jake, long time no see.” Her sarcasm is evident. It’s like we’ve been seeing each other more and more these days.

“Going on a day jog?”

“Gotta stay in shape.”

“I don’t think you can ever getoutof shape.”

I need to stop letting things like this slip from my mouth. But she just laughs and puts her hands on her hips as if what I just said wasn’t borderline creepy.

“Man after mine own heart.”Oh, you have no idea. “Are you done for the day?”

“Now I am.” Thank God.

“Great, hop in.”

She looks at me with confusion and a hint of a smile. “Taking me to my dorm?”

“Depends. Do youwannago to your dorm?”

“Not at all,” she says alluringly. I smile. The chemistry between us is clearly there. It’s almost too good to be true.

She instantly gets in and takes out her earphones. As she settles in, her spandex rises up a little bit, and it takes every ounce of my self-control not to look.

“Where are we going?”Don’t look, don’t look. Look into her eyes, idiot.

“You hungry?” I croak.

“Very much so.” Great, so am I.But not for food.

“How does Angie’s sound?”

“Fantastic, actually.” And with that, I’m driving off-campus.

We settle into a booth across from each other, and a brunette waitress immediately sets waters down before saying she’ll be with us in a second. When she walks off, all I can do is look at Leia. I’m surprised she hasn’t called me out for being creepy yet, but staring at her is becoming my new favorite thing to do.

“Tell me something, Leia.”

“What’s that?” She gives me the brightest smile. It takes me a while to focus as I clear my throat.

“Are you really sixteen?”

She laughs again, making my insides tingle again. Like a wuss.

“Yes I am. I’ve been told many times that I seem older.”
