A week later...
I slept in Sarah’s room for the rest of the week.
I couldn’t deal with the drama from a week ago. Taya was on emotional overdrive, Hunter was making matters worse, and it was the first time I lost a bit of faith in Jake Larson.
You know guys talk about everything with each other.
She was right. Could Jake be keeping secrets from me? If he could keep Hunter’s cheating a secret, whatelsecould he be keeping secret?
“Do you think you’ll be ready to go back at some point?”
I pretend I don’t know what Sarah’s talking about. There’s no way I can go back to that room. I’m not sure when or if I’d be ready to come face to face with him.
“I don’t see myself going back there anytime soon.”
He hasn’t tried to reach out to me in a week, and that hurts the most. After all of that, he didn’t even have the courtesy to check in and ask if I was all right. Maybe I was expecting too much from him.
Or maybe you’re just being a bitch.
“You haven’t even given him a chance to explain, Leia. It’s not fair that you’re punishing him like this.”
“I have given him chances to explain, Sarah. One week’s worth, to be exact. He knows I have a phone; he can simply call or text me.” She lets out an annoyed sigh before getting up and making coffee. What does she expect from me? “What’s that sigh for?”
“You’re doing it again, Leia. You’re trying to run him off.”
“I’m not doing anything, actually. I just wanted a break from him. If he really cared about me, he would’ve texted or called. He’s done neither this entire week.” I know I’m not being completely fair, but I’m tired of forgiving and forgiving, and getting nothing in return.
“He’s not going to text you, Leia. From what you told me, he bared his soul to you about his life. I don’t know the details. But in his mind, you just disregarded that fact and didn’t have enough faith in him to listen to his side. That kind of makesyouthe problem right now.”
My heart drops when she says this. She’s right. I’m being insensitive. But I’m not sure if I want to hear the real story about what happened.
Suddenly, the door opens, and in walks Taya. When she sees us talking, her smile drops, as does her purse to the floor.
“Leia...you’re still here,” she says with disdain. “Talking about me, no doubt.” She rolls her eyes and goes into the bathroom.
“I was actually just leaving.” I put my clothes in my duffle bag and give Sarah a quick hug. “I’m just gonna head back, then. Thanks for letting me stay here.”
She gives me a small smile. “Of course, Leia. You’re always welcome here. But you really need to get in the habit of giving him the benefit of the doubt, if this is gonna work.”
I give her a nod, and I’m close to saying how she’s right until Taya weighs in. “Why do we like giving guys the benefit of the doubt? They hurt us, but we have to givethemleniency? How is that fair?” she asserts, walking out of the bathroom.
“Taya...Jake didn’t do anything, babe. He didn’t cheat on you.” While it’s true he may have kept the affair a secret, it’s not fair that she’s punishing him for whatHunterdid.
“HeknewHunter was cheating on me! That makes him guilty in my book!” She practically shouts in my face. “Just because he’s your boyfriend, it doesn’t mean you can just abandon girl code and forgive him. I have feelings too, Leia.” This is the first time I’ve seen real hurt in Taya’s eyes. I try to give her a hug, but she steps away from me. “If you’re going back to him, I have nothing to say to you. Just leave.”
She walks around me and jumps on her bed. Sarah gives me a sorrowful look before looking at Taya. Hesitant to leave, I let out a breath and finally walk out of the door.
I’ve never been inside a room so empty before. I wasn’t expecting for his things to be gone the second I got back a week later.Now you know how it feels.And it feels like shit. There are so many unanswered questions.
Why didn’t he tell me about Hunter cheating?
Why didn’t he text when I was gone?
Why didn’t he at leasttryto explain why he kept it a secret?
Why didn’t you trust him enough to hear his side?
