“You should take that. I’ve heard you throwing up several times a day for the past three days,” she says.

“Jenna?” I ask.

She presses her lips together, rolling them a few times as she looks at me. “You were with Riff over three weeks ago, Tanner.”

“Okay?”

There is a moment of silence as she stares at me. Her eyes are wide, and she tilts her head to the side as if she’s trying to tell me something, but I don’t understand it. She looks at the bag again, then lifts her gaze to meet mine.

“Tanner,” she whispers. “It’s a pregnancy test.”

I suck in a breath, lifting my hand to my lips before I scoot away from the bag as if it’s going to cause said pregnancy. Jenna reaches for the bag, picks it up, and thrusts it toward me. I still don’t take it, I can’t. I can’t touch it.

“I have class,” I whisper.

She snorts, shaking her head. “Classes you fucking hate with a passion.”

I don’t confirm or deny that I hate the classes. I haven’t said a word about my real estate courses since I started them three weeks ago. I haven’t said a word, because it doesn’t matter how I feel about them. I’m doing them because it’s what Brent wants, and I don’t have any other options right now.

“That part doesn’t matter,” I whisper.

“It does, Tanner, but this test matters more. It’s the most important test you’ll ever take in your entire life.”

“If it’s positive?” I ask.

She shakes her head once, then shrugs her shoulder. “Then you go from there.”

It’s really sweet that she thinks I could just go from there when it comes to Brent. He will not tolerate it. Not at all. There is just no way in hell. What I need is to have this license done and a few commissions under my belt so that I can live my life the way that I want, but I don’t think that I’m going to have the time for that.

I think I’m well and truly fucked… and not in a fun way, either.

“I need to be alone,” I whisper.

Jenna doesn’t make a move to get off of the floor right away. Instead, she reaches out to me, grabbing ahold of my hand and squeezing gently. She doesn’t say anything, but I can see that she has a million things she wants to say.

Slowly, she stands to her feet, her eyes finding mine. “I won’t say anything to Brent if that’s what you’re worried about. I won’t say anything to anyone.”

“I’ll never ask you to lie to Brent, not ever,” I say.

She shrugs a shoulder, looking behind her at the closed door, then shifting her attention back to meet mine. “I won’t lie, but I’m not going to offer anything to him.”

Without another word, she tugs the door open and slips out, leaving me alone with the little white plastic bag. A white plastic bag with red lettering of the pharmacy’s name. Then, I reach into the bag and take out the package of two tests.

Then I take one.

When the results come back, I take another.

Both have the same answer staring back at me, screaming at me with a single digi-word.

Pregnant.
