Chapter Eleven

“Roll out,” Nicholas directed. Everyone else moved except Zander. Nicholas’ eyes were immediately drawn to him. He could see anger in Zander’s eyes, unrequited anger that wasn’t easy to let go of. Nicholas took a step in his direction.

“Z.”

But Zander didn’t hear his brother. He was too focused on the woman in front of him.

“I should kill you.”

There was so much intensity in Zander’s voice that it stilled everyone that remained in the room. Fear lived in the eyes of Zsanine’s brothers. They knew little about Zander. What little they did know was enough to believe what he said.

Alessa believed him, too. Her eyes couldn’t widen any more than they were. And then, when she dared to refocus her eyes on Zander, she knew in that moment the only thing she could do was pray. When her eyes closed, Alessa’s life flashed before her. The scene of her brothers’ murders flashed before her.

“No, please,” Gianna begged from across the room. Zander didn’t hear her either.

Nicholas slowly closed the distance between himself and his brother. Although he understood his brother’s feelings and felt like the Di’Carlo’s deserved everything they got, rescuing Zsanine was more important. He reached up and placed his hand on Zander’s shoulder.

“Z.”

Still, Zander didn’t move, the pressure he had on the gun intensified, and Alessa’s air stifled completely that even breathing through her nose proved difficult.

“Come on, bro,” Nicholas encouraged. “Zsanine is waiting for you.”

Zander scowled, baring his teeth. But it was the Don’s touch and Zsanine’s name that brought Zander back from the brink.

Finally, he took the gun out of Alessa’s mouth.

“You’re lucky, bitch.”

Climbing down off the table, Zander’s eyes traveled to Gianna. She was still fear-stricken, especially since his full attention was on her. She knew at any moment he would lift the gun, aim it at her and shoot. She’d seen him kill before. He wasn’t above it.

“Let’s go,” Zander uttered.

Zsanine needed him. He needed to focus all of his attention on seeing about her. Fuck the bitches he left in his wake.

Nicholas followed his youngest brother out of the room. All other bystanders fell in line after Nicholas.

When everyone was outside, the Don spoke.

“I need the A unit to go ahead. Set up a perimeter. Locate Zsanine but do not engage. Keep all cars out of their periphery.”

Nicholas looked around the group as he spoke, including Zsanine’s brothers. He wanted to make sure they understood and wouldn’t inadvertently jeopardize her rescue by moving out of order.

“When we arrive, we will move as one unit. We’ve got one chance to get Zsanine out safely. We don’t know whose there, if they are armed, none of that. So, move smartly. Move swiftly and when in doubt, shoot first, answer to me later.”

Nicholas returned his gaze to Zsanine’s family. They still looked shaken from what they had witnessed.

“I know you want to help, but let our team do the work. They’re trained for this. Understood?”

“As long as Zsanine gets off safely,” Brigham said, speaking for his brothers.

“She will,” Zander affirmed, that same intensity still present. “She will.”

Bianca was still shaking after the phone call. She didn’t know what to do with herself. What she did know was that no matter what, she couldn’t say anything to Bella. The best way to do that was to stay out of Bella’s way, to distance herself from her sister so she wouldn’t be pressured to say more than she should. Her worse fear had manifested. The St. Clair’s knew what they had done, and now they were on the way.

They’re gonna kill us. They’re gonna kill me.

Bianca’s stomach turned over. She was scared. But what could she do about what had already been done?
