“Why would I do that?” He asked, getting close enough that Bella could smell his cologne. “Isn’t this what you deserve after what you’ve done?”

“You did this,” Bella hissed. “You hurt me, so I had to hurt you in return.”

Zander smiled. “You mean, try to hurt me in return. But that BJ Principle? That was almost clever.”

“BJ Principle?” Gideon asked.

“Yeah, brother.” Zander turned away from Bella and faced his brothers. “That’s the name this bitch used to lure Zsanine here. BJ Principle, Blow Job Principle. Clever.”

He saw how confused they looked, his answer not providing enough clarification.

“She thought by giving me a weak ass blow job that somehow I would forget all the shit her and her folks did to our family, that they tried to kill us.”

Then his brothers understood.

Zander pivoted on his heels and returned a heated, stern gaze in Bella’s direction. Bella tried to back away from the intensity, but there was no place for her to go. This was not what she planned at all. And to see the level of rage in Zander’s eyes, she knew it wasn’t going to end up the way she hoped.

“So what? You thought you were going to do what? Lure me here, kill me?”

She didn’t know how to answer that. Bella was no longer mouthy, no longer bold enough to speak her truth. But Zander wouldn’t settle for her silence.

“Is that what you thought?” He asked again, coming so close she could feel his exhale.

“Yes,” she uttered. “Yes,” she replied louder. “You hurt me. You embarrassed me.”

“If I didn’t have an incredible woman just outside that door waiting for me, I would plant your ass in the ground.” Zander took a step back. Bella was enjoying his proximity too much. She didn’t deserve the luxury.

“But first, I would off your mousy ass sister over there, you know, the one that gave you up. I’d make you watch me end her ass, and then I’d end you.”

Bella’s eyes widened with surprise. She had no idea. Bianca didn’t return her sister’s gaze. She was more afraid of the men in the room than her sister.

“Is that what you want to do?” Rome asked. “Because we can make it happen.”

“Please, no,” Bianca begged. “Please.”

Bella shook her head before her mouth could formulate her response. She hadn’t wanted to accept that she was defeated, humiliated again. But it seemed inevitable.

“You’re not even worth the effort, for real.”

Zander turned on his heels, turning his back to her. That stung Bella’s heart.

Zander stopped next to the Don.

“Jessica, I want her to handle it,” Zander said.

“I’ll make the call,” Nicholas agreed.

Everything Bella imagined this situation to be hadn’t turned out the way she wanted. Now, she had to face the fact that she was in jeopardy, that the rest of her family was in jeopardy.

“Zander! Zander, please!”

He’d been away from Zsanine too long. As Zander exited the house, he knew his brothers would handle the situation. Walking up the walkway, he heard Zsanine on the phone. Seeing that she was okay, standing there, Zander was filled with gratitude, replacing the anger and hatred he felt just minutes before. Now he would focus all his energy on being there for Zsanine, making things right with her.

“When are you coming home? You don’t need to be at your place by yourself,” Zsa Zsa asked.

“I won’t be alone,” Zsanine replied.

Her mother wasn’t sure how to respond to that. Her father, either. They desired the assurity of being able to see her, protect her and keep her safe. And even though they wanted to share that sentiment with their daughter, they were quiet, not wanting to press her. She’d already been through so much.
