Silas nodded.

“By how much?”

“A minute,” Silas confessed.

Both Cade and Hope laughed. Silas, however, didn’t find anything comical in their response.

Silas seemed to have trouble holding still. He crossed and uncrossed his legs, shredded the paper napkin, and nibbled on the corner of his mouth. “I should have known this was a bad idea.”

The door opened and the three looked up as a stunning, tall woman made her way into The Logger. She glanced around before she spied them, paused, and then smiled. Cade glanced at Silas and saw his friend visibly relax.

Without hesitating, Jada walked directly over to their table. She smiled when she looked at Silas. “Like you said, I wouldn’t have a problem finding you in a crowd.”

“Told you I stood out like a sore thumb.” He stood and pulled out a chair for her. “These are my friends.”

As Jada extended her hand, Cade saw the burn scars that ran up her arm. Hope caught his gaze as she saw them, too. In that moment, Cade knew everything was going to be just fine with Silas.

And just maybe for him, too.
