CHAPTER ELEVEN

GIA

I had called his number for the tenth time. Something was off. I could feel myself slipping every minute and I needed his reassurance. The progress I had made towards being a normal human being when I was with Morla, was fizzling away. The familiar feeling of paranoia was beginning to settle in threatening to drown me.

I eyed every person I passed on our way to lunch. This was a stupid idea. I thought I could pretend to be normal for just a moment. I wanted to believe it was the chip in my brain making me see and hear things. It felt like a shadow was following me.

The hairs on my arms stood up and I told Drummer I wanted to go back to Julian’s house. I needed safety more than I needed to eat. He just shrugged and we turned around.

As we walked back into the parking garage, everything happened as if in slow motion. Drummer grabbed my elbow and picked up his pace.

“Don’t look back,” he said.

It wasn’t just my crazy brain playing tricks on me. He felt it too.

We went from fast walking to running, but that did not last long.

After a few steps of running, Drummer shoved me down against the side of a parked car.

“Keep your head down,” he commanded.

A bullet whizzed by us hitting the side mirror.

Drummer got on his belly and started to look around.

I knew what he was doing, counting feet.

“Twelve,” I whispered.

I had been trained for moments like this.

Drummer sat up, pulled out his holstered gun with one hand and the car keys from his pocket with the other hand.

As he pressed the keys into my palm he said, “I’ll distract them. You run for the car and get out of here.”

“What?”

“Just do what I tell you,” he whispered.

“What about-?” I started to ask.

“Now!” he yelled springing up.

I heard four shots go off and four bodies hitting the pavement.

“Run!” he yelled.

I did.

Shoving the keys in, I started the car then whipped it in reverse all the way to where he stood. I leaned over and opened the door.

“Get in!”

Drummer got in while continuing to fire one handed while holding the door from flying open with the other.

As soon as we got out of the parking garage, he pulled the door closed and turned to me.

“Thanks for coming back for me. Julian said you had been in some kind of trouble but good god. What was that?”
