I pushed the door open more and squeezed past her stopping as I stepped inside. There were candles everywhere.

Marissa sauntered over to bar, “would you like a drink?”

“What the fuck is this, Marissa?”

I was not here to drink or be seduced. I had a mission.

She sashayed over to me, threw her arms around my neck, and brought her lips to mine. Stunned, I stood motionless as she made her move. Quickly coming to my senses, I pushed her away. She took a step back with a pout and disappointment in her eyes.

“This is not why I’m here. Enough.”

She skimmed a hand down my shirt and back up, “then why are you here Julian?”

I grabbed her wrist and her look turned from disappointment to hate.

Her voice had an edge to it, “we used to mean so much to one another. Remember that one night when we got so drunk?” Then, she put her hand over her stomach, “we will soon be attached forever. I will actually give you a baby, not like her.”

“I am not here to pick up where we left off nor am I interested in this baby charade. Ever since Rylie came back, you’ve become desperate. The confident woman I knew has left and I don’t like this new person you’ve become.”

“You’re just being mean.”

“I’m being honest.”

“She left you! She disappeared for five years leaving you hurt and broken. She was about to give part of your company to a competitor, and you still love her? God Julian, you’re a bigger fool than I thought.”

“Shut up Marissa. You want to talk, let’s talk.”

“Can’t we have just one more night of fun? Let me show you what you’re-“

“I swear to God Marissa. Desperation is unbecoming on you.”

She let out a huff and sat down.

“Fine.”

“Let me make one thing crystal clear to you. Rylie never left; she was kidnapped.”

“Okay, whatever you need to tell yourself Julian.”

“A few days ago, I learned that I had been funding that little project. You knew about this the entire time and never told me?!” I yelled, my voice on the edge of screaming. “You knew they were taking people for their insane experiment, and you never told me!”

“Whoa. What are you talking about? What project? Kidnapping?”

“Don’t play dumb. You said I funded The Wonder Project, so yes, you know something. When I asked you refused to give me any more information. They took my wife, killed my child, and the person who has come back to me isn’t the same one who left. So, tell me what you know about all of this. Stop fucking around Marissa!”

Her eyes were wide, and her skin turned pale.

“I swear Julian…I…I…I didn’t know it was that messed up. I knew they were doing some kind of technology experiment and I knew that it failed. That’s all, I swear. One night Dylan came to me, completely drunk. He said he was going to use your money for something and when it paid off, he would tell you. I thought he was just rambling on; you know how he always gets ideas. A few months later I asked him about it, and he said it was going really well and he was going to tell you. I thought you knew…well, until recently. He came to me and said it all went south and the money was gone. He asked me the best way to tell you. That’s when I realized it was The Wonder Project. I had no idea about Rylie, I promise. That shootout earlier, was that them? Jesus, Julian.”

I shook my head. I was not sure how much I could trust her.

“You know Marissa…I just…I just can’t.”

“What does that mean?” she asked.

“That means I will take care of things on my own. That means we are done both personally and professionally. I’ll figure out how to buy you out.”

With that, I stood and started walking towards the door.
