I turned towards the door and he grabbed my shirt.

“Don’t hurt my son, please. He has nothing to do with any of this.”

“I’m not like you Dylan,” I jerked to remove his hand. “You took my child without a second thought. I’m not like you.”

As I left the building to get into my car, my phone rang, and I put it to my ear.

“Tell me,” I spoke first.

“I got to the bottom of it. After they started having problems with that project, all the other ones were put on hold. They need to bring in all their assets before moving forward on anything else. Rylie is the last one. There’s some company called Bryant Holdings. It sounds familiar, doesn’t it?”

It was like my entire life was an endless spiral of pain and suffering and I just could not seem to get the hang of it. I pinched the bridge of my nose and squeezed my eyes shut to gain control. The pieces were falling into place.

I sure did know who Bryant Holdings was. They came to my rescue when I was desperate and had been active partners in my business for years, even investing in some commercial buildings with me.

Marissa Bryant, I thought. Damn, Dylan was trying to protect Marissa while she was ready to throw him under the bus. He was trying to protect the woman he loved, something I failed in doing. He had collected money from me for Marissa and was taking the fall for all of it at the expense of his son. He was willing to put his son in harm’s way for her.

I went back into the building and up the stairs where Dylan was being manhandled out of the room. It was all making sense. Now, I understood Dylan’s comments about mixing women and business and me housing the bigger enemy. He was giving me hints.

I loved Marissa as a friend, maybe not in the same way she wanted, but I did care about her. I prayed my information was wrong and I was not sleeping with the enemy. What if she really was pregnant? Bile began to rise in my throat and rage pumped through my veins.

“I am going to ask you once, and I want a yes or no answer. Once, got it?” I looked him straight in the eyes and he nodded.

“Did Marissa and her father run The Wonder Project?”

I could see his Adam’s apple bob up and down as he gulped.

He nodded again.

“I need to hear you say it.”

“Y…yes.”

A cold shiver went up my spine.

“Did you know Rylie was in the program?”

“Yes,” Dylan’s head fell forward in defeat.

“Did she…” I was not sure if I could handle the answer to my next question, but I had already come this far.

“Did she kidnap my wife and kill my son?”

His forehead creased in worry, “you know she loves you, right?”

My world was shattering into a million pieces once again. Maybe Father Mayers was right, I was not worthy of love. No one would ever love a boy from bunker seven.

Before doing something I would regret, I turned and left.

As I was walking away Dylan said, “you should check up on the people you surround yourself with…like your right-hand man.”

My phone rang again and stopped me from going back in and silencing Dylan’s voice forever.

There was panting for a moment before I heard, “Boss! We’re being attacked! Two men injured!”

I had hired some men to keep an eye on Marissa. I did not know if she was going to be in harm’s way or part of the problem. She must have figured it out and called for her own help.

“Where is she?”
