The hairs on my arm stood up.

“Not really…” I trailed off thinking.

“Have you heard of an off shoot of theirs called The Wonder Project?”

“Oh wait, I do know Bryant Holdings. A Marissa Bryant,” my heart was now beating in my mouth.

“Okay, but no Dylan?”

“I’ve never met him. I think he’s a friend of my husbands,” I gulped back the bile. “Is he responsible? Does Marissa have anything to do with-“

My eyes darted around the room searching for a garbage can. I emptied the little bit I had left in my stomach.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Morning sickness. Well, all day sickness really. Please don’t tell anyone.”

“I’m like a lawyer. What happens in here, stays in here. Except that garbage can,” Sivan chuckled and picked up the phone.

Moments later his secretary appeared, gave me a compassionate look and a glass of water, then disappeared with the garbage can.

“Ready to continue?”

“Please,” I cleared my throat and took a sip of water. “The Wonder Project, what’s that about?”

“The Bryant company was facing bankruptcy and to keep afloat they took on mysterious projects. No one seemed to know exactly what these projects entailed but that they were funded by big companies using technological advancements to eradicate disease and poverty. I mean, it sounds like a good thing, right? What I also found out was that your husband’s company invested thirty-eight million dollars as well. But,” he cleared his throat. “I did a little more digging and discovered some of these experiments were on actual human beings. I’m no scientist but that seems illegal.”

“Wait, wait. You mean they take real people and use them like lab rats? Is that what you’re saying?”

“It appears,” Sivan opened the file. “It’s spearheaded by a Marissa Bryant and seems to have been going on for a while.”

He slid the file towards me and with shaky hands I picked it up. A cold sweat rolled down my back as I read what he had found. Not only was Marissa part of it, but Julian had given a huge sum of money we never discussed.

Oh my God, Julian helped her company perform human experiments. Oh my God. This was much worse than anything I had imagined it would be. I wished it was sweet Juanita behind those articles.

I told Julian she seemed off. Did he know what he was supporting? He said I was overreacting and shrugged me off. He said I did not need to worry about it. This was the man whose baby was inside of me. I started to see stars at the edge of my vision.

I jumped to my feet and paced the small office hoping to make the stars disappear.

What the fuck was going on? Why would she write those nasty things about me? Did Julian help her?

“Motherfucker,” I muttered.

“Uh Rylie, that’s not all.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“I wish I was.”

“It can’t be worse than what you just told me,” I narrowed my eyes.

I could see the hesitation in his eyes as he dropped his gaze to another file sitting on his desk containing even more lies that I was not sure I wanted to know.

“Keep going no matter how I respond. I need to know it all,” I tried to put on a brave face while my insides were in knots.

“There is this picture…” he slid a picture towards me. “She seems to be having an affair with your husband. We weren’t sure at first but got this last night.”

“What do you mean by seems to be…Oh my God,” I looked down to see the two of them standing in front of Julian’s favorite Italian restaurant with their lips pressed together. “They’re fucking each other?”
