I could feel the fear being replaced with rage.

“They weren’t caught in the act, and we weren’t able to find any trails that led us to a hotel or anything. We just got this moment…”

I looked up to meet his eyes, but he was avoiding my gaze.

“But…I am afraid that’s not the worst part.”

“What do you mean? How could this get any worse?” I flopped into my chair. “Go ahead and shatter any shred of dignity I have left,” I sighed.

He reached back into his desk drawer and pulled out a brown accordion file and pushed it towards me.

“I know I’ve just dropped a lot on you that is really life changing. Go through this. I’ll be out getting a cup of coffee to give you a moment.”

He got up, put his hand on my shoulder for a brief moment before softly closing the door behind him.

How the fuck could any of this get worse, I thought.

I looked at the file in front of me, wishing I could somehow numb the pain that clawed at my chest. As I pulled the folder towards me, a small recorder fell out and landed in my lap. Unsure how much more I could take, I started to look through the documents which seemed not as ominous.

As I flipped through each piece of paper, I was slightly comforted because I had already seen most of the information. It was just more documentation of the truth that had been revealed. Marissa’s name was scattered everywhere. It seemed I was merely a chess piece in whatever game they were playing.

I picked up the small recorder and flipped it around in my hand. I took a deep breath and decided I had come to far to not know everything.

I pressed play.

“I know you love me Julian, I know you want me as much as I want you. Come here, don’t walk away from me.”

I recognized her voice, it was Marissa. The now familiar feeling of heartache intensified. It felt like someone had their hand around my throat.

“Are you out of your mind?!” I heard my husband lash back. “Are you freaking insane? I’m married, I love my wife. Why the hell would you come to me like this?”

I could hear him walking away.

“Julian, please. Hear me out.”

“You’re fired!”

So far, this recording did not seem as bad as I thought it would be. I settled back in my chair and relaxed.

“What? Because I kissed you? You’re such a baby.”

There was a brief pause.

“Alright, I understand that was inappropriate, and I’m sorry. I was drunk, I had a little too much to drink, I’m sorry. Wait Julian.”

“I’m done Marissa. You’re fired.”

I heard a door slam.

“Julian! Julian! You can’t fire me! Julian!”

I could hear her breath heavily.

“He will pay for what he did to me, he will pay. I know he loves me, that stupid wench is so beneath him.”

There was another pause. I assumed the recording was finished, but as I touched the button to stop it, I heard a phone ring.

“Hello,” her voice boomed through the speakers again.
