“Are you sure about this?” I ask, afraid to hope.
Honey’s phone dings.
My pulse leaps.
Art?
But no.
It’s a text from Blue, which Honey triumphantly shows me:
Checked out the marriage certificate against **classified**. No such thing was issued in Russia on that date. Also checked in **classified** and learned that Art never married in Russia or in the US—that is, until Lemon.
Another ding, and a second text from Blue shows up:
Speaking of Lemon, tell her that the dancing bitch got hers. For mysterious reasons, “she” filed papers to permanently change her name to “Crusty Vagina,” and someone with friends in the right places made sure the name change was expedited. However, the name change reversal, should she file for one, will take as long as these things can possibly take.
Honey beams at the phone. “Just picture your nemesis handing someone an ID that says ‘Crusty Vagina.’ Or booking a restaurant reservation as Crusty Vagina. Or going to the doctor, where they’ll call for a patient named Crusty Vagina. Or—”
I wave her away. I couldn’t care less about revenge on Black Swan at the moment. Not when I’m realizing what a monumental ass I must have seemed to Art.
I didn’t give him a chance to explain.
I ran out of our wedding reception in front of everyone.
Fuck. Fuck.
He must be so pissed.
I would be if I were him.
“I need to call him.” I grab for Honey’s phone.
She yanks it away, out of my reach. “I blocked him and deleted his number, remember? Let’s see if Blue can help.”
She fires off a text, and a minute later, Blue texts us Art’s number. She also informs us that Art was asking about me last night, and that she told him I was okay.
“How did she know I was okay?” I ask Honey.
“No idea.” Honey scans her surroundings as if looking for hidden microphones or cameras.
“Anyway,” I say. “Call him. Now.”
Honey dials the number and hands me the phone.
The call goes to voicemail.
My heart sinks.
“Art, pick up, please.”
He doesn’t.
I call back.
Same result.
Damn it.
