Lily shook her head. She didn’t want to care what happened to a sister she’d never even met. She was supposed to keep people at bay. But as she shifted in the saddle, she knew that she couldn’t just hide away and allow the other woman to be taken.

Being held captive had been awful.

What was more, Arabella was Ash’s friend. How could Lily ask him to guard her and leave his friend exposed? “New plan?”

“New plan.”

They were turning around to face those men. No running and no hiding. Her stomach dropped, but she forced her shoulders straighter.

She saw the pain in Ash’s eyes and knew he didn’t wish to put her in danger. That helped. A great deal, in fact.

Without his aid, she swung down from the horse. “I’ll need a pistol.”

His brows arched. “You know how to shoot?”

“Enough,” she answered. “And I’ll need a promise.”

“Promise?”

She nibbled at her lip, not sure how to ask. Finally, she settled on the blunt truth. “I’d rather be dead than taken by those men again. If I’m in danger…”

“You can’t be serious.”

“I am. I know you’re a good shot. Kill me before they can carry me away.”
