Not that she’d allow herself to hope anyway. She was a different woman from Arabella. Her sister was a woman who could likely remain independent even in a marriage.

It was better for Lily to remain dependent only on herself.

Lifting her chin, she squared her shoulders. “So, you both trust the men to see us through this?”

They both nodded.

But Lily winced again. “In circumstances like these, I’d normally hide.”

“Are you chased by an organization of thieves often?” Lizzie asked.

She laughed. “No. Normally, I’m the thief.”

Everyone laughed at that—until Lizzie let out a long breath. “What interesting lives you’ve both led. This is by far the most exciting thing I’ve ever done.”

Lily stared at the girl. “Exciting? I could do with far less excitement.”

“I agree,” Arabella said with a wink. Then she opened her mouth to say more, but didn’t finish.

Edge yelled out again.

“More visitors.”

Lily shrank down in her seat, fear knotting her chest as the carriage slowed once again.

Suddenly, the door swung open, Ash appearing in the doorway. “Lily. Take the women and hide.” She nodded as Ash looked to Arabella. “If something happens to us, you drive and go like hell toward London. Understand?”

Her heart pounded in her chest. Was he afraid?

What if something happened to him?

But there wasn’t time to ask as he reached out his hand and pulled her from the carriage.
