Ash frowned down at her, pulling her closer. “What do you mean?”

“Would she have killed them before they’d ever been able to take her from London?”

His brow furrowed. “I don’t know. She’s rather good with a variety of weapons.”

Lily shivered and Ash automatically pulled her closer. She appreciated his embrace so much and he’d just saved her life again. But she had to wonder—was she endangering them further in being here? And with Ox gone, the one man who’d recognize her, was now the time to break away? Was she being selfish in wanting to stay?

“It’s all clear!” Lockton boomed into the woods.

Clubs crashed toward them, pushing through the underbrush to scoop up his wife.

Lily watched as he gave Lizzie the sort of kiss that spoke of love and fear and commitment, and inside, she ached a bit.

Ash’s fingers splayed out on her back.

“Do you think that’s it? Was that all of them?”

Ash shook his head. “I don’t know. It might have been.”

She sagged in relief. She liked the idea of returning to London with Arabella. Working in her shop. Would she even be able to see Ash on occasion?

“Then again, that might have just been the scouting party. It’s too soon to know.”

Lockton joined them. “It’s time I did some scouting of my own, I think. We’ve been on the defensive this entire time.”

Ash gave a nod. “Good idea.”

“I’ll catch up to you in a few days.”

Lily stared at Lockton’s back in confusion. “Why would he do that?”

Ash stroked his fingers up and down her spine. “It’s his club too.”

Ah yes, the gaming hell. That place was what this was really about. Here she was beating herself up over trust and affection, when for them, this was about money. An important distinction to remember. With a deep breath, she stepped away from Ash. “How many days will it take us to reach London?”

“Four. Three if we move quickly.”

“What then?”

His brow furrowed. “Do you not wish to return to your brothers?”

“No.”

His grimace told her that he didn’t know. “That is a problem for another day.”

Or it was her problem to solve long before they reached London.
