I can’t bring myself to look at him when he’s got that hopeful gleam in his eyes.

“Regardless, I’m happy to be part of the Damon Carlisle experience,” he says, bringing us back around to work.

“I think Vedant’s really taken a liking to you. Patrick, too.”

That gives him pause. “Not enough to offer me the international spot.”

I scrub a hand over the back of my neck as we move toward the cashier. “Yeah, well…”

“You haven’t told Kate yet, have you?”

I use my elbow to shove him out of the way. “You’re as bad as your wife, you know that?”

He snorts. “I’ll take that as a big, fat N-O.”

“Fuck off, Chuck. I’ll tell her, alright? I’m just waiting for the right time.”

Tapping the counter absently, he draws out, “Right.”

“Vedant’s arranged a meeting with Patrick after this.”

I shuffle around in the pockets of the pants I was wearing, searching for my wallet. When it falls to the ground along with my phone and room key, I mutter a curse.

“Does that mean you’re taking the job?” he presses as I bend down to pick them up.

“Fucking hell. Yes, okay? I’ve decided to take the job.”

My key card skitters out of my grasp and across the tile to a spot now occupied by a pair of heels attached to slender feminine legs.

I bite back a groan, but Chuck isn’t shy about the sigh he heaves. I shoot him a sidelong glance as Shaylea, in a skin-tight black dress, bends down to help me. Her electric blue thong is eye level as her legs part.

“Let me help you with that,” she says too huskily to be natural.

When she hands me my wallet, I mutter an awkward thanks before asking what she’s doing here.

Her sparkling heels clack against the tile floor as she gives the store clerk a small paper ticket. “I’m picking up Vedant’s suit, silly.”

From behind her, Chuck makes a gagging motion when she winks at me.

“I have to say, Damon. You look hot in that suit.”

Her devious eyes trail from head to toe.

“Thanks… I guess. I’m sure Vedant will look just as nice tonight.”

She scoffs. “Please. That old man wouldn’t be attractive if he was coated in glitter.”

I narrow my gaze, fed up with her and these antics. “Hey, Chuck. Give us a minute, will you?”

He’s seething when I glance his way. “Yeah, no problem.”

Clawlike nails skim up my chest as he retreats.

“Wanted a little alone time, hmm?” Shaylea purrs.

I grab her wrist, retracting her nails from my shirt and guiding her away from the checkout desk.

“Whatever game you’re playing, I’m not interested.” My tone is gritty, almost a growl.
