Page 112 of One More Kiss

My heart races fast enough to make my head spin—one of the many side effects where Damon is concerned.

But then, I never was very good about reading warning labels.

I blink. Amid our argument, my hands have found their way up Damon’s chest, clutching his shirt while his palms rest on either side of my neck, stroking the bottom of my jaw with his thumbs.

“I was never going to leave you, sweetheart.”

A tear falls, and he sweeps it across my cheek.

“I may have accepted the London position, but I had every intention of keeping you.”

I’m rocked by the admission.

Damon still wants to be with me.

The sound of boots pounding against the pavement breaks the fog. “What the hell is going on here?”

I’ve barely had a second to form a coherent thought before a massive body is barreling through my periphery.

I release Damon with a sharp inhale, jumping back as if getting caught in the middle of something far more damning than an almost kiss.

I’m shoved out of the way as the man I’ve been betrothed to dips his shoulder into Damon’s chest.

“Stop!” I shout at Thad, terrified that with that snarl on his lip, he just might start swinging.

Damon stumbles half a step but manages to place himself in front of me, shoulders squaring and fists clenched as he readies for a fight.

Tall, tan, and far too muscular for his own good, Thad glares at the two of us furiously.

Like seeing a ghost, I’m shocked still.

Damon turns to me, frowning and confused, and if I wasn’t holding on to it with everything I’ve got, my soul might just leave my body.

Thad’s about to ruin everything.

Question after question builds across my tongue until they’re pressing against my lips, but I’m frozen with fear, unsure if I want the answers.

“Katie.” Thad says my name like a warning.

“W-what are you doing here?” I finally manage.

Damon observes the two of us closely as Thad ignores my question. “You wanna fill me in on why my girl was about to kiss another man?”

I don’t recognize the possessive, brooding male whose tone suggests he’d happily throw a few punches if he needs to.

“Answer me first,” I say as the first sparks of anger slowly build. I carefully step around Damon to face him.

“Your mother was supposed to let you know I was coming to get you this morning.”

“Coming to get me?” I place a shaky hand over the front of my neck. “How did you even know where I was?”

He opens his phone and selects our last set of messages. When he taps my contact info, I see a little blue dot blinking on a map that shows the surrounding area.

Anger and embarrassment scald the center of my chest. Thad insisted we keep our location sharing on throughout our relationship, and I never questioned him as to why.

Clearly, forgetting to turn it off was a major miscalculation on my part.

“Kate?” Damon questions from behind me.
