His grasp on me is so tight that I can hardly keep hold of him. My leg winds around his, then the other, and then I’m being hauled up around his middle.

“I think a piece of me died when you left that night,” he growls against my lips, ravaging them once more. Tugging and pulling, he pauses to say, “I thought I’d lost you. I thought I was never going to have this again.”

Tears slide down my cheeks and into our mouths. “I’m sorry, Damon. Leaving you is one of the biggest regrets of my life.”

Unable to help myself, I press another kiss against the warmth of his mouth.

“I love you, Kate.” He slowly lowers me to the ground before cupping my cheeks and pressing tender kisses to each side. “I’ll never understand how it happened, but with every piece of my soul, I do.”

“Group D, this is your final boarding call.”

Our chests rise and fall with the aftermath of our shameless public display.

“I have to go,” he whispers tightly.

I try for a smile even though my heart breaks all over again. “I know.”

“I’m going to call you the minute I land.” His hands are everywhere. Touching my hair, lips, and face as if losing us twice is too much to bear. “Promise me you’ll answer.”

I reach for one fussing palm and give it a squeeze. “I promise.”

He twists toward the door of the jetway where he’ll walk onto the plane that’s going to take him far away from me.

“Go,” I say when he hesitates. “You’re going to be amazing.”

Damon gently grabs the side of my neck, pulling me into him.

I curl my fingers around the solid strength of his wrist, shaking with the effort not to beg him to stay.

“One more kiss,” he murmurs against my mouth, teasing me just before he goes.

“Always.”
