It doesn’t take Damon long to deduce the situation.

Our gazes collide when his finger presses beneath my chin. It’s not a demanding touch, but he seems insistent on searching my face.

A vision of me straddling his leg earlier slams into me. I’d been this close to him then, and I saw the same desire simmering in those hazel eyes as I do now.

“You’ll stay with me, then.”

If it weren’t for that lone finger holding my jaw in place, it’d drop. Turning out of his hold, I wave my hands.

“Not only no, but definitely no.”

Damon’s devastatingly sexy when he glowers like that, and—I’vereallygot to stop thinking about him like this.

“Look, I’m not going to ask what’s going on here. But if you’re in some sort of trouble…”

I laugh. “I’mfine, Damon. I promise.”

He must catch the caress of his name on my lips, or maybe it’s the big fat lie, because now he draws his shoulders back, eyes darkening ever so slightly.

My head swivels when he brushes past me to grab my things.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

I stomp after him and swat at his hands when he grabs a pile of clothes by the bathroom door and shoves them into the small suitcase.

He stands, glaring down at me. I don’t consider myself short, but I barely reach the man’s chin.

“This room smells like piss, there are lumps in your mattress, and there’s not even somewhere for you to shower.”

When he bends down to swipe up another article of clothing, I do a quick pit check.

“Who needs to shower when the ocean is my backyard?”

Damon’s eyes whip to mine.

“Kidding.”

Sort of.

“I’m going to take you back to my room, where you can unpack and run a bath in private. I need to check on some things for my meetings in the morning anyway, so you’ll have the whole room to yourself for a while.”

One step toward me, then two have me backpedaling until my heels tap the bottom of the bed. I tip my head up when he brushes that obnoxiously attractive chest of his against mine.

“And I won’t hear another word out of you. Got it?”

My embarrassingly audible gulp may as well translate to,Yes, sir.

It’s too hot in here for my blood pressure to rise any higher, and yet, when his mouth twitches, my pulse does just that.

“Damon, that is ludicrous. We hardly know each other, and the last thing I want to be is a burden.”

He rubs the stubble along his chin, considering me.

“What if I offer you a place to stay for the remainder of your trip? And in exchange, you agree to do something for me.”

Blood pounds in my ears. “W-what do you have in mind?”

The corner of his mouth tips up. “I need a date, remember?”
