Her breath bottled within her chest. If he was confused, then she was doubly so.

As if to read her thoughts, and as if to deny her any answers, he shook his head and pulled back, soon stalking away in determined footsteps and out the bar’s exit.

Does he hate me so much he’d abandon a night with his friends? Did I hurt him so badly?

Come to think of it. Yes, I did.

Ally blew out a loud sigh. “Oofdah. Now that was different.”

Wayne shrugged, too busy peeling the label off his beer bottle to look at Ally. “He’s hardly spoken all night. He just stared at the bar, holding that prickly look he gets sometimes.”

Ally turned her head to the bar, a wrinkle forming between her brows. Her line of sight leveled up to a tall and attractive blonde woman, her long, flaxen locks glinting in the light, as she wiped down the counter. “I bet he’s having problems with Sarah again.”

Goosebumps rose over Emilia’s skin, and she worked hard to hide her frown, the thought striking her that maybe she hadn’t been the cause of Blaine’s misery after all.

Sarah looked around the same age as her but moved with a precision, and speed, and most notably a purpose Emilia simply didn’t have. The woman paused and peered up, her stare colliding with Emilia’s as though she’d sensed the attention.

A sinking feeling forced Emilia to turn away, to hold back her anguish, to hold back her next inappropriate question. A question she couldn’t hold back at all.

“Who’s Sarah?”
