She’d called to reconnect with her father, to maybe salvage something of her life back home. But clearly, none of that would happen. Just as she’d feared, she was as alone as ever; though so far, her solitude in Harlow did her far more good than all the company that had surrounded her in LA.

“Goodbye, Dad.” She took a deep breath, one that shook on the exhale, and ended the call.

Her father hadn’t offered any kind of support or protection. Not that she’d expected he would; otherwise, she wouldn’t be hiding in Harlow. Perhaps it was time to let go of this relationship too.

She slumped back and lay on the floor, blinking away tears and swallowing the thick tension clogging her throat. Somewhere out there, Anthony roamed free while she couldn’t. Not really, anyway. All she could do was lie in her unfurnished bedroom, hoping that the law would catch him before he got to her.

And what if he does find me first?

No one would be around to hear her screams, not here alone in this cottage, and anyone associated with her would be at risk.

Dark spots flashed before her eyes, and her throat turned dry and scratchy. He would want his revenge. He would go for broke. Only her pain and subservience would do. Maybe even her life.

More than ever, her life revolved around looking over her shoulder and waiting for an end to her brief freedom. What stupidity had made her think she could escape?

She did have one choice though. A choice on how she would spend her potential last days. She could pass her time just as she had in LA, living in fear and trying to stay alive… Or she could take hold of these first and last gasps of freedom and run with what she’d started.
