CHAPTER ELEVEN

SONIA

It was a long night.I’m not sure what time I was finally dragged under by sleep, but when it happened, it was only to end up in the land of nightmares. Horrible visions of my home burning and gunshots filled my mind, making me even more tired than if I’d just remained awake.

Santos must have had it just as rough. Probably the price you pay for a guilty conscience. He tossed and turned as much as I did, maybe more.

By the time the morning sun filtered in through the large window in our bedroom, we were both anxious to get up.

I sit, rubbing my eyes groggily, ready to begin another day filled with darkness and despair at everything I’ve lost. My soul is so sad that I don’t even bother with my usual comments toward Santos to let him know how much I hate him.

Instead, I watch as he throws off the blankets and shuffles toward the bathroom naked. That’s when I spot it, a huge bird tattooed on his perfect ass cheek. And from the looks of it, the ink still black and the skin around it red, it’s fresh.

I’m not sure what happens. Maybe it’s that darkness can only last so long before your heart needs a break. Maybe it’s just that funny to me. Whatever it is, I burst out laughing. And it’s not just a snicker. It’s the sort of laughter that has me folded over in bed as I hold my belly.

He whirls around to me. “What?”

“You got a—” I can’t even finish my sentence. “On your butt!”

His frown lasts only a moment before he smiles. “I love to hear you laugh, even if it’s at my expense.”

I sit up as the warmth in his eyes settles over me. “It’s nice to laugh. I needed that.”

“No, what you actually need is fresh air. You’re looking pale. When was the last time you stepped outside?”

“You mean since you trapped me here?”

Ignoring what I’ve said, he adds, “You know what you really need?”

“What?”

“A ride.”

I glance at his cock which is standing at attention. As tempting as it is, I shake my head. “Santos, I already told you I’m not touching you.”

“I didn’t mean me. I meant a horse ride.” He mimics the motions of holding the reins and riding. “Let’s go wild for a while. Forget about everything.”

“Already did that,” I say, pointing to my head. “Remember?”

His lips pull tight. “Right. Then we definitely need to go out. It would be fun. We deserve fun. Tomorrow you can hate me again.”

I sigh in agreement. Itwouldbe fun. “All right.”

“Good!” He rubs his palms together with glee. After he showers, which seems pointless since we’re about to sweat, he steps out of the bathroom. “I have to make a phone call in my office. Can you be ready in twenty minutes?”

He comes closer to the bed and his clean male scent invades my space, forcing me to bite back a moan. Twenty minutes? I can’t be ready that fast, not when I also have to shower and torturehim. “Can we say forty-five?”

“Sure. I’ll meet you out front.”

The moment he leaves, I hop to action—showering, plucking, preening. Getting angry at myself that I care, especially since I’ve promised myself I’d never let him touch these parts I’m making bare.

After placing my hair in a slick pony, I line only my top lids, giving myself the cat-eye look, and then apply a light pink lip gloss.

In the closet, I find a blue plaid shirt, jeans, and brown knee-high cowboy boots.

“It’s just a ride, nothing more,” I say to my reflection in the bathroom mirror as I give myself a last once-over. “Just because he made me laugh doesn’t mean anything.”

Dios mio, what am I doing?
