“You must return to the house. I will escort you.”

Frowning, I glance in the direction of the place I’m sure Santos is in. “Why all the security?”

“Come with me.” The man ignores my question, taking my arm and pulling me away. I let him but turn around, eyeing the place suspiciously.

“What’s goin—” I’m cut off as a man bursts through the door so hard, it falls off the hinges. “¡Jesucristo!” I back up into the guard as the other man rushes toward us.

Santos comes out after him, but he doesn’t chase. He stands on the wooden deck, raising his arm. Four loud booms crack through the air. I gasp when blood sprays my chest as the man falls to my feet.

Still alive, he grabs my ankles trying to right himself. “Please, help me!”

I take another step back, pulling myself from his grasp, too stunned to do anything but look between him and my crimson-soaked clothing.

Not that I could help him if I wanted to, because in that moment, Santos comes over to us and shoots him once in the head.
