My mind made up, I get out of the shower and dress in a jean skirt, a T-shirt, and comfortable sneakers. Then I riffle through the jewelry box I found in one of the dresser drawers, digging out any pieces that seem valuable and shoving them in my pockets along with a wad of cash Santos left on the counter.

I glance at the bathroom window. That’s one mistake I won’t be making again. This time, I’ll be smart.

Taking several deep breaths to calm my nerves, I relax my face. If I don’t make a big deal, they won’t either.

“You can do it,” I say to myself as I leave the room.

Fortunately, I don’t run into Santos on the way out, although I do see a black Mustang parked out front beside his El Camino. That means his cousin Damian is around. Another man I’d rather not run into.

“Hola, chicos,”Hello, guys, I greet, moving quickly past the guards. “I’m going for a ride. On my horse, Nieves.”

They look at me, then at each other. “Enjoy your ride,” one of them says.

I pick up my pace as I round the fountain, slowing only to peek inside both vehicles. If there’s a key, I might just try my luck. And wouldn’t you know it, Damian’s car has his.

The sight of them makes my steps falter and my hand itch to reach for the handle. Should I go for it? If I do, I’ll have to be fast. Start the vehicle even before I’ve shut the door. The pedal needs to be hitting metal within a split-second, and anyone who gets in my way is going to be roadkill.

It’s a plan. As good a one as I can come up with right now. Santos said the perimeter of his land is guarded. If I go by horse, I might get stopped. But in a car, I can plow through any borders.

I flick my gaze at the guards near the house to gauge the distance. Huge mistake because they’re already watching me carefully, and this just seems to give away my plan.

It’s now or never. I grab the handle, but before I can lift it, another guard, one I hadn’t noticed, is on me. He drags me away from the Mustang kicking and screaming.

“Get off me!” I bite his arm and he throws me away from him. Taking advantage, I attempt to run but barely make it a few yards before I’m once again snagged. The asshole literally plucks me from the ground as if I weigh nothing and slings me over his shoulder.“¡Cabron!”

“Sonia, calm down!”

I stiffen momentarily, realizing it’s Santos who has me. But I don’t give him a reprieve for long. In fact, I fight with everything I have, bucking and scratching at his back like a wild animal.

But it doesn’t sway him from returning me to the house. If anything, it seems he’s enjoying it too much when he says, “It’s not exactly how I envisioned myself getting scratch marks on my back, but I’ll take it.”

“Sueltame, ¡bruto pendejo!”Let me go, you fucking brute!I pound my fists against him as we enter the house. But it’s not until I manage a well-placed kick in his balls that he doubles over, dropping me in the process.

Somehow in the chaos of my fall, I land on my feet. Instantly, I move away from him, my nostrils flaring.

I’m aware there are other people in the foyer with us, but I don’t look at them. My full attention is on the man still holding his manhood. I’ve never been angrier. Never felt more like a prisoner. And it’s all his fault.

It might be pointless, but I lunge toward the door. However, I don’t make it past Santos before he wraps his arms around me and lifts me off the floor.

“Let me go!” I fight to loosen his hold, but he’s too strong.

“No,” he grunts, and it pleases me to no end that although I can’t get away, he’s struggling to keep me this time.

“I’ll kill you!”

“Fine,” he says, then turns to whoever else is in the room with us. “Please excuse us. Alejandro, I’ll be late to the meeting.”

I finally glance at the others. Montero and a blond girl who’s clinging to his arm watch in fascination as I’m dragged away. Back to my room. My cell.
