“Did you want me to?”

I sit up at the velvety smooth voice I instantly recognize. “Diego, what are you doing here? I thought you’d be in Spain by now.”

Through the darkness, I see his shadow move to the window. He opens the heavy curtains slightly, letting in a little bit of sunlight. I squint at him because I haven’t seen brightness like this in so long.

“I couldn’t leave you like this.” Concern fills his expression and I feel ashamed that I can love a heartless bastard more than this kind man. “Your father told me what happened.”

“I wish he hadn’t,” I groan.

He comes to sit beside me and strokes his hand down my face. “And I’m glad he did. I’m sorry, Soni.”

“Are you really? With him gone, it leaves the path wide open for you.”

A sad smile paints across his lips. “All I want is your happiness, no matter who it’s with.”

It’s true, I can see it clearly in his eyes. Maybe that’s what prompts me to tell him what only Amelia knows. Everyone still expects us to end up together, and he deserves the truth.

“I’m pregnant,” I tell him. “Santos is the father.” It takes all I have to glance up at him, because I know what I’ll see.

Pain fills his expression as he stares at the pillow beside me, and I hate that I’m the cause of it.

“Say something,” I plead.

“Does your father know?” His voice comes out steady, though I can sense the tightness in it.

“No.” I press myself against the headboard. “I just confirmed it this morning. But I won’t be able to keep it a secret forever.”

He flicks his gaze at me, looking more serious than ever. “You won’t tell him.”

“What? I’ll only be able to hide it for so long before it becomes obvious.”

“You won’t have to tell him, because you will not have Santos’s baby,” he says seriously.

“What?!” I cry in outrage. “I’m not ending this pregnancy.”

“I didn’t say that,” he says in a hushed tone, peering over his shoulder toward the door. “You will not have that man’s baby, because it will be mine. Marry me. Be my wife and I will be a father to this child. We will give him or her a family.”

“But…would you love it like your own?”

His eyes soften and he reaches for my hand. “I love you, Soni. This baby will be a part of you and I will love it with all my heart. I know you don’t feel the same way about me, but you care for me, don’t you?”

“Very much,” I admit.

“Then marry me.”

I press my palm against my belly, sensing the presence of that tiny being there. The product of my insane love for a man who didn’t want me as much as I did him. And here I have a man who does.

“Yes,” I say. “I’ll marry you.”
