Four hours later Reese drives me to the woman who does Liz’s hair. “Aunt Liz says she’s the best. There’s not a mess she can’t fix.”

“I can’t fix this,” Giselle says, holding up the black strands for inspection.

Turning to Reese, I scrunch up my face, my eyes watering involuntarily. “Oh my god!”

Reese runs to us, and taking my hand, asks the stylist, “Is there nothing that can be done? Can’t it be bleached?”

“Only if you want her hair to fall out. It’s been badly damaged. Did you leave the dye in too long?”

I look away. “No-o-o,” I lie.

She obviously doesn’t believe me, but moves on. “The best thing for us to do at this point is to concentrate on repairing it, instead of changing the color back. It’s too dark to do it safely. Eventually it will lighten on its own.”

I groan and sink further into the chair.

“Do what you can,” Reese tells her.

“We’ll start off with a trim,” Giselle says.

“A trim! It’s taken forever to grow it out after… Uh, it takes a long time to grow.” There’s no way I’m going to confess to the self-trim I gave myself six months ago, where I accidently cut a huge chunk off the back and ended up needing to cut it all off.

“It needs to be trimmed, Mom.”

“We won’t trim much, just an inch or so,” Giselle adds.

I shake my head. An inch that took me months to grow!

The stylist ignores my distress. “Then we are going to lightly strip, and add a dark brown. And we will condition the hell out of it. In two weeks or so, we’ll see what the state of it looks like and repeat the process.”

“Okay, do it,” Reese tells her, then squeezes my arm before leaving me there.

I stare at my reflection, resigning myself to my new shorter, darker hair. Why did I do this to myself? Because of Dean. Because I have no idea what I’m doing or what I want when I’m around him, so instead I do stupid shit like this.

Well, I guess I’m going to get what I set out for when I went into that drug store. He’ll like me less now that I don’t have that blonde hair he seemed so fixated with. Only that’s not what I want at all.
