CHAPTER 19

“So you and old Deano got it on in the spa, did you?” Liz asks, shoving a ton of kale into her mouth.

“Mom!”

“Those blabbermouths. I knew they’d talk,” I say, taking a bite of my own kale, cranberry and almond salad.

“So it’s true?” Sheridan asks. “I read it, but was giving you the benefit of the doubt.”

“Do I look like it’s true?” I say, pointing the fork to my face.

“You look like you have to take a shit,” Liz states.

“That’s right. I’m wound as shit,” I say. Though I bet Dean isn’t.

“Isn’t Julie going to meet us for lunch?” Reese asks.

“Nah. She sent me a text earlier. Something about we need to enjoy Key West on our own and favoritism.”

“What’s Dean doing?” Sheridan asks.

“His parents arrived a while ago. They were heading to the beach.”

Which is exactly what we do after our meal at Candor. There’s something to be said about working your ass off every day and reaping the rewards. But as I sit that very ass in the warm crystalline waters of Smathers Beach, I reap nothing but laziness and am perfectly okay with that, too.

I look up at the deep blue sky, closing my eyes against the sun as it weaves in and out of clouds. It was supposed to rain today, but the powers that be decided it should be a nice day after all.

“It’s so beautiful here, kitten.”

“Why don’t you move with me,” I say, looking to Sher as she contemplates the ocean. Or perhaps her life.

She takes a sip from her tumbler and says. “I can’t take Henry from Stephen. And I don’t want to give him up. I know, I know. You’re probably thinking he’s just a dog.”

“I wasn’t.” What I was thinking, was that she’s afraid to leave. I guess we’re all scared of something.

“Your phone is buzzing.” Reese pulls it out of my bag, looking at the screen. “From a DC. Who’s DC?”

Liz and Sheridan look at each other and start giggling. I grab the thing out of Reese’s hand before she can read it, glaring at the two cackling hens. “What’s so damned funny?”

“Nothing. Just, DC. Sounds funny,” Sher says.

I frown at them, then look at the text.

-Tony confirmed he’s out late tonight. Come over?

-What time?I ask.

-9.

-I want you on that bed naked when I get there,I demand.

-Done.

When I look up, all three are smiling back at me. “What?”

“DC booty call?” Liz asks.

“By that cheesy grin on her face, I’d say that’s a big fat, hell yes!” Sheridan laughs.
