A whisper of hope.

Silence reigned, full of ominous finality.

And still, Divina held her breath.

Wishing. Praying. Yearning with all her heart.

Finally, a rumbling growl vibrated through the air. The sound of a god’s unraveling patience.

And reluctant acquiescence.

“My daughter is waiting for you at the Mirror Pond, child,” the disembodied voice echoed, the deep bass of it strumming through Divina’s body like a physical touch.

Comforting.

“Farewell,long-er.”

And then, the voice was gone, along with the inexplicable weight that had laced the air. Such was the presence of the Heavenly god.

Felt but never seen.

Divina scrambled shakily to her feet, her mind awhirl with possibilities.

“I take it that was the mighty Jade Emperor,” Ere said from a small distance away.

“Strange that he made no mention of the Song he sent us to find.”

Divina was silent. Still thinking.

What could Papa Jade have meant? There was something in his words…

“We don’t even know if the time has run out,” Ere was saying. “Where is that sandglass anyway? I never saw it reappear. How do we know our quest is truly over? Especially since we haven’t brought back the Song?”

“If Fufu is to be believed,” Divina mused absentmindedly.

“Shifu wouldlie?” Ere asked, aghast.

“Half-truths,” Divina answered. “Gods and their henchmen cannot be trusted.”

“So, now what?”

Divina mulled Papa Jade’s words over and over in her mind.

He’d instructed her to go to the Mirror Pond.

He’d bid her farewell.

He was saying goodbye.

Which meant—

She gave an excited hop and squealed with jubilation, making Ere flinch and duck his head, as if he feared she’d launch into another five-minute eardrum-bursting banshee wail.

“Gotta go, guys!” Divina said as she crushed Ere, then Sorin, in brief, tight hugs.

“I loved getting to know you! Good luck on your next adventure! And since we brought back a treasure for Papa Jade’s collection, even if it wasn’t the right one, make sure you get something in return for it. He owes you. Don’t forget!”

“Where are you going, feather dragon?” Ere called after her as she rushed back out of the palace and down the steps.
