Chapter One

“Forethought is better than afterthought.”

—Vatnsdæla Saga

A good fight always made his blood burn, pulse thunder, and lust-crazed.

Most of all, it made himhungry.

Master had instructed him in no uncertain terms to subdue the red dragon, prevent it from wreaking havoc in its powerful rages upon the Celestial Realm since it first awoke.

Definitely not kill it.

But the white-bearded emissary of the Jade Emperor never said Kai couldn’t tear off a limb or two to snack on, now did he?

Heh heh…

It wasn’t often Kai got to unleash his Beast form since his celestial resurrection, so he had little opportunity to chow down as a dragon. There was nothing so satisfying as tearing into his prey with claws and teeth, breaking through hide and bone with a mighty clap of his jaw.

He licked his long, forked tongue around his maw in anticipation.

The red dragon might be slightly emaciated, but he was a big motherfucker. When he bulked up more as he recovered from whatever torture or malaise he’d endured, he’d be almost as big as Kai.

But Kai had always been, and always would be, thebiggest, he growled with pride and satisfaction.

Red put up a good fight too, had a few magic tricks up his sleeve with those hypnotic yellow eyes of his. The sly reptile. But Kai possessed a few things in his favor.

First, the fact that Red had his wings clipped. Well, sawed off gruesomely, more like. But same difference.

Second, one of his eyes was still kinda murky. So maybe he hadn’t recovered the full range of his vision. And maybe whatever magic he wielded wasn’t fully up to snuff.

But most of all, Kai was a warrior dragon who killed for a living. Wings or no wings, magic or no magic. In a one-on-one showdown, Kai always won.

Simply put, he was the biggest, meanest, craziest berserker in the realm.

In any realm.

Alas, as a long-dead earth dragon with a Celestialchimu, he could only go full Beast mode when the Fates dictated. Only during galactic battles. Always with him ending up dead.

Well, back to dead.

He existed only on borrowed time, at the whim of others.

Before the dust settled in the aftermath of the battles and wars he won for those who used him, he would already be back in the Celestial Realm to await his next mission in silence, paralysis and isolation. Frozen while conscious in one of those freaky chrysalises the Jade Emperor stocked up on.

At least, Kai thought there were others. Even though he’d never seen any, apart from Red, given his own solitary confinement. But hesensedothers like him. Felt their faint heartbeats and breaths.

Huh.

Not his problem though. He was solely concerned with his own satisfaction during the brief interludes when he was allowed to exist.

The only time he really had to enjoy himself was in his humanoid formbeforethe final battle. Hence, he never got to gorge on the meat and gnaw on the bones of defeated foes as a dragon. Not the way he used to do in his first incarnation during the Age of the Gods. When he’d been trulyalive.

Ah, how he missed it. The freedom of a Beast.

He never took humanoid form before he died (for the first time) tens of thousands of years ago. Those had been the best times, when gods still ruled heaven, earth and sea. When his foes had been far larger, more lethal, magical.

Just like him.
