He waseverything.

“I’m no expert in spear making,” came Ere’s voice behind her, “but I think you’re supposed to hammer and hone the metal while it’s hot.”

Startled from the gaping adoration of her magnificent male, Eir looked down at the cooling metal.

She’d have to heat it again. It seemed that she’d been reheating the same spear for the past hour already. Her attention was obviously not focused on the task at hand.

With an exasperated grunt, she began to rework the weapon.

Was it her fault that the open forge looked over the villagers’ makeshift training ground where Kai and Sorin drilled the militia each day from dawn to dusk?

Well, today, Kai didn’t show until almost noon. Thanks to Eir. And when he did show, his reflexes weren’t as quick as usual, his body moving slower, as if weighed down by enervation. Also thanks to Eir.

Endless hours of lovemaking and sleeplessness tended to drain a man.

And by the flashes of quick, shy grins Kai sent her way—he didn’t complain.

“Earth to Eir, yoohoo, come in, Eir,” Ere chattered right beside her ear like an annoying buzzing bee.

“You’ve gone off to la-la land again. Got that glazed look in your eyes. And that leery, scary smile on your face. Like you’re imagining X-rated scenes in your dirty, depraved mind.”

Finally, she spared him a glance.

“Your strange speak confounds me,” she said haughtily. “I am working. Do not distract me.”

Ere purposely eyed the half-made spears on the long bench beside her.

“Sure. I can see you’re hard at work. Look at all that productivity. It might be ten years before you finish making enough spears to outfit our small militia.”

Eir pressed her lips together and glared at the irritating male. Instead of wasting her breath arguing with him, she went about reworking the metal, and tried to ignore the bothersome dragon.

Over the last few days, she’d come to know that Ere and Sorin were not only Mates, they were dragon and phoenix mates. Like Kai, they had animal forms where Ere could transform into a gigantic, black, flying dragon, and Sorin could turn into a fiery phoenix of almost equal size.

In this realm, however, they were trapped in their human bodies for reasons none of them understood. Only Kai could release his natural dragon form when the time came.

Ere leaned against one of the wooden posts of the outdoor forge as if settling in for the duration. For a stretch of silence, his attention was divided between watching her work and watching Sorin and Kai back at training the militia.

He whipped an apple from the pocket of his tunic and rubbed it on his sleeve before biting into it with a crisp crunch.

“Look at that,” he said with a breathy sigh.

“All those gleaming muscles on display. I could watch him move all day.”

Despite herself, Eir couldn’t help but stop and watch too.

“Beautiful,” she murmured, staring at Kai.

Ere huffed a snort and flicked her fishtail braid.

“I meant Sorin, in case you were wondering. Not sure what you’re looking at. Kai is a big lovable lug beneath that hard shell, but I wouldn’t call his scarred, scary ass ‘beautiful.’”

Eir narrowed her gaze murderously at the thorn in her side.

“Kai isbeautiful,” she seethed through gritted teeth, her stare and tone implying clearly that she’d break the bones of anyone who dared to claim differently.

Ere’s eyebrows flew to his hairline.

“Indeed,” he quickly amended. “The most beautiful berserker that ever existed. I stand corrected.”
