“If it were you prophesized to do battle with a Frost Giant, I’d be making the most of every moment I had with you,” he told his Mate.

“Yet, she’s so hesitant and unsure. What is she waiting for? He can’t possibly have declared himself more hers. There’s nothing left to be afraid of.”

Sorin turned to briefly observe them before turning back conscientiously, as if he wanted to give them privacy.

“It is not easy to love for everyone,” he said. “Love is like a mortal wound that never heals.”

Ere grimaced theatrically.

“That sounds both dramatically romantic and terribly agonizing,” he remarked. “Would you rather not love if you could?”

He’d asked the question in a flippant manner, quite certain of Sorin’s answer. But once he voiced it, Ere wasn’t so sure.

Wasit “terribly agonizing” for Sorin to love him?

He knew that his Mate had suffered tens of thousands of years alone and isolated for the lack of Ere by his side. When they’d reunited in his present incarnation, Ere had been so preoccupied with his own issues, he hadn’t thought enough of Sorin’s pain.

Sorin had given everything of himself to heal Ere, and asked for nothing in return. He never spoke of his tribulations in so many words. The male didn’t often use words vocally or telepathically to begin with. Ere only had brief snippets that Sorin revealed to go by and extrapolate from.

He only knew that Sorin hadsuffered.

Ere had his share of trauma and torture, but Sorin had suffered in a different way.

For all those millennia, his Mate had barely been alive. The various incarnations of his body existed on earth, but his soul was mostly dead.

What must that have been like? Ere had never thought much about it, for it pained him to imagine Sorin in pain.

But now, reuniting with his long-lost earth dragon brother and seeing Kai’s transformation over the past days—from a living stone to a vibrant heart—it triggered Ere’s thoughts of what Sorin must have been through as well.

What he wasstillgoing through?

But…

That was all over now, right? The black dragon and his phoenix Mate were together at last. Wasn’t Sorinhappy?

Uncertainty clouded Ere’s gaze as he peered into Sorin’s eyes.

Sorin grasped his hand and pulled him closer, until Ere stood between his spread knees as he sat upon a rough-hewn bench.

“No power in all the realms could alter how I feel,” he vowed.

Trying for some much-needed brevity to lighten the mood, Ere tipped his head coquettishly to the side.

“Howdoyou feel exactly?” he fished.

Would this be his lucky day? After all these human years together, would Sorin finally say those three little words?

Sorin’s golden eyes shimmered as his mouth curved in the subtlest smile.

But he didn’t answer.

He simply brought Ere’s hand to his lips and placed a hot kiss in the center of his palm.

Ere sighed, both disappointed and delighted.

It was their game, he supposed. He knew without a shred of doubt, down to the roots of his soul, that Sorin loved him beyond all reason.

But the male never voiced it in so many words. He showed Ere in the way he looked at him, touched him, made love to him.
